All About West Nile Virus - CDC Grades 9 to 12

While West Nile isn’t likely to be a specific curriculum element anytime soon, the Centers for Disease Control’s page about West Nile offers good content showing how public health officials monitor and respond to the emergence of new infectious diseases. Try this one in a current events discussion, asking the question, "How big a problem might this actually be?"

Use this online biology study guide to find the answers to more than 1800 questions on a variety of topics. Read through the questions from beginning to end in order to completely understand the material as it is arranged in order to completely understand the concepts. Click on a variety of topics including "Biochemistry," "Zoology," "Ecology," and "Diseases" among others. Click "Search Answers" and enter your question to find items that can answer your search.

In the Classroom:
Students can create a mind map of the information in order to understand the concepts and record for later. Challenge students to create the mind maps on large paper that can be posted in the classroom (or use an online version instead.) Check out bubble.us to create an online mind map reviewed here. As new topics are discussed, connect these new mind maps to existing ones to view concepts learned in Biology. Take abbreviated pieces of information to add to a classroom or multimedia display that portrays learning in the classroom. Add pictures and other interactive elements to create a story of learning. List this link on your class website for students to access both in and out of science class. If your class uses bubbl.us to create an onoing “map” to your studies, you can embed it in your class wiki! Your visual learners will connect new topics to prior knowledge using this visual prompt. Rotate the task of adding new topics to the map as the year goes on.

HeartPoint - HeartPoint Grades 6 to 12

HeartPoint has created this site that takes a creative approach to teaching students (and adults) about the heart, heart functions, and heart problems. Highlights include "Foods You Will Love" and "Health Tips". Be sure to visit the "HeartPoint Gallery" for detailed pictures, descriptions and other information.

In the Classroom:
FCS and health teachers can use this site for student research or scavenger hunts about the heart. The recipe section would be great for FCS classes learning to plan healthy menus. Health/PE classes studying life habits and disease will find lots of information on cardiac conditions and prevention.

Inside the Brain: An Interactive Tour - Alzheimer's Association Grades 8 to 12

This highly visual site gives visitors an unforgettable tour of the brain and explains the functions of its three main parts. Formatted as a self-paced slideshow, the site also provides an intense explanation of the effect of Alzheimer's disease on brain tissue. Roll your mouse over the colored text on each slide to view the specific region described.

In the Classroom:
Create a basic Web hunt or graphic organizer to guide students through the slideshow and encourage them to focus on the vocabulary and descriptions. The visual component of this resource helps students understand the logistical as well as functional aspects of each major region of the brain.

KFF - World AIDS Day - Kaiser Family Foundation Grades 9 to 12

The Kaiser Family Foundation prepared this guide to AIDS events and resources, with a particular emphasis on information recognizing the global AIDS epidemic and the efforts that will be required to combat further AIDS spread in Asia and Africa. Thoughtful students will find much to ponder here. The dates extend through 2007, but much of the information remains accurate.

In the Classroom:
Plan a "World AIDS Day" activity in your health class or as part of a discussion of current events and challenges to global health and economics. Have students create online posters using Wallwisher, (reviewed here) or multimedia presentations using Voicethread reviewed here to share on a class wiki or a cafeteria kiosk to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS around the world.

Kid's Health - The Nemours Foundation's Center for Children's Health Media Grades 3 to 12

Divided into parts for parents, younger children, and teenagers, Kid's Health presents health issues in an attractive, frank, and appealing format. The younger kid's section features a daily health question, homework help, a "Big Question" section, hot topics, and health concerns presented from the point of view of the child. In addition, some of the pages are available in Spanish. Other sections include health issues for grown ups and a glossary, the latter of which is available in Spanish. Video clips include health-related topics featuring well-known athletes. The teen section provides answers to multiple teen questions about health including sexual issues, drug and alcohol concerns, food and fitness, your body, your mind, and hot topics. The parents' section has regular health topics about raising a child. Requires Flash.

In the Classroom:
Health teachers will want to share this site on their teacher web page or in class as part of sex ed units and study of disease. Younger students wondering about illnesses such as cancer will also be able to find good information, written at a level they can understand.

This site contains open discussion of topics. We suggest that you preview it to be sure it is in compliance with your school's policies. Some portions discuss topics that will cause great giggles among less mature students, so preview and set the tone before trungin students loose.

Malaria No More - Malaria No More Grades 8 to 12

Bring a disease and a part of the world unfamiliar to students to their computer screen. Explore the "Malaria" link to understand where and how malaria is transmitted. Understand biology and health concepts through the real world study of malaria. This site also contains information on donating to malaria control and prevention as well as ways to stay informed of progress. You may choose to caution students about clicking on links not approved by the teacher or the school district. There are links to join the Facebook group and follow Malaria No More on Twitter.

In the Classroom:
As you study diseases in general, use malaria as an example. Use the site to identify how malaria is transmitted and methods that can be used to prevent the transmission of the disease. Identify how the scientific method has been used in order to identify how a disease has been transmitted as well as treated or prevented. Compare information found about malaria to research other diseases and compare to other diseases and vectors. Students can create a conventional or multimedia project to display knowledge to others. Create graphic organizers to show the progress of the disease. Students can also create a wiki to show information or a blog for discussions with others. Not sure what a wiki is? Many students may feel compassion for children in other countries and seek to help in some way. Use this site for ways to help those in other countries fight this terrible disease.

Peace Corps Challenge - Peace Corps Grades 4 to 12

This site helps students make the global connections that we are all human and must help each other. The challenge is to help the people in the tiny village of Wanzuzu. Narina (your Peace Corps guide) will lead students throughout the many challenges of this website. Students meet up with the mayor to discuss the water contamination (and ways to fix the problem). Many natives meet up with students along the way to offer help and tips. Students learn about the overall health and health care by visiting the clinic. Many other points of interest are visited during the journey.

The site includes eight detailed lesson plans with standards, video clips, online stories and games, and much more to enhance the lessons. Teachers, click on the Teachers link on the main page to access all of the lesson information. The actual activity opens in a new window, so you can easily go back to the lesson plans at any time throughout the journey. This site requires Flash and Adobe Acrobat. In the Classroom:
Use the ready-to-go lesson plans to take your students on this life-changing journey to Wanzuzu. The interactive tour and activities would work well on an interactive whiteboard or projector. However, if individual computers are available, have students work with a "Peace Corps Partner" to navigate the site together. The lesson plans and activities can be used in language arts classes, social studies, geography, health, and science class. Use this site to help students think globally not just locally.

Reconstructors: Medical Mysteries - Rice University Grades 9 to 12

This site offers a set of four complex, flash-based units that teach concepts of biology, human health, disease processes, and the like. While intended for secondary students, users may need help with some of the vocabulary. There’s a LOT to learn in this site, and we suggest teachers may want to preview each of the units thoroughly before using them with students.

This web report from the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation offers quick facts on SARS, a variety of background reports, and current reporting on the spread of this daunting new disease. As of this writing, outbreaks of SARS in Canada have been more numerous that in the United States.

Staying Alive - Grades 6 to 12

Here’s the personal side of AIDS, told from an international perspective in an MTV-style presentation that should hold the attention of teens and other students. Combining facts with personalities, the site offers facts, opportunities for action, and examples of other teens’ experiences. Share this one with your students; it's available in several languages.

Extend the experience of this site by having your students write a blog post from the point of view of a young person with HIV/AIDS, perhaps in another culture.

West Nile Mapping - USGS Grades 6 to 12

This USGS site offers regularly updated, state-by-state maps showing the spread of West Nile virus in birds, animals, and humans. Apart from its news value, the site offers an interesting glimpse into the ways in which diseases spread through populations of different species.

Why Does Evolution Matter Now? - PBS Grades 9 to 12

The growing problem of antibiotic resistance is explored in this lesson plan that investigates how evolution is at the heart of this wide-spread health threat. Real-time videos demonstrate how disease-causing agents can rapidly become immune to our best antibiotic defenses. Share the relevant word searches on your interactive whiteboard or projector. Have cooperative learning groups practice spelling or vocabulary words by creating their own word search. List this site on your class website for students to use both in and out of the classroom. This is a great one for those word search lovers in your class. Why not have students use a whole-class account to make their own word searches to challenge each other with new vocabulary and terms?
