News for the Classroom

Today in the News: CNN's daily almanac page provides a look at past events from this date, a look at important things happening today, and a schedule of upcoming world events. This site could be used to find great "starting points" for a current events discussion.

The links below provide supplementary information about current events stories. These are frequently tied to print periodicals or broadcast news programs. If your class is using one of these programs, these pages can be extremely useful. Even if you don't have access to specific publications or programs, the questions and analysis in these pages can help spark discussions or add interest to a discussion of the news.

CapitolWatch - Grades 6-12 - While not intended specifically for students, this daily summary of AP stories from Washington provides a concise way of tracking developments in the national political scene and the federal government. Good source for news-based assignment ideas.

CNN Newsroom Guides - Grades 4-10 - Yet another in CNN's extensive series of web offerings. This site offers text and study questions based on the content of CNN's daily Newsroom program for schools. The structure is easy to follow, and the content, while tied to the video program, stands effectively on its own when necessary.

Newspapers in the US - Grades 4-12 - Here's an extensive collection of links to online editions of hundreds of U.S. newspapers. This is a particularly valuable resource for students interested in activities in small towns and cities that receive less national coverage.

The New York Times Learning Network - Grades 6-12 - Contains stories, images, and study questions drawn from the Times' regular news coverage. Particular emphasis on stories of interest to young people, and on New York news. Useful with or without the newspaper.

Newsweek.com - Grades 4-8 - A site in the midst of transition, Newsweek offers a selection of information and resources for students. Content is tied very tightly to the print publication, but the presentation format appears to be undergoing revisions.

TIME for Kids - Grades 3-8 - A Web version of the TIME version for young students, with a selection of stories for this age group. Access to the print version is helpful, but not required.
