HIV/AIDS Education Resources - Coninciding with the UN's just-concluded international AIDS conference, this new TeachersFirst collection includes information on HIV/AIDS as both an international epidemic and an issue with which schools must deal at the local level. We have included resources from several countries, highlighting effective teaching strategies for an issue which mixes scientific, cultural, and bahavioral issues in a challenging combination.
About Your Heart - Grades 3-6 - Here's a Shockwave animated site that introduces elementary students to the heart, how it works, and what it does. Created by the Minneapolis Heart Foundation, the pace of this site may irk adults, but we suspect the kids will have fun learning. You'll need the Shockwave plug-in.
Bicycle Helmet Safety Institute - Grades 4-12 - This site has basic helmet bicycle safety information for younger students, as well as lots of detailed specifications and statistics for adults. This is a good place to find information on sizing helmets and other data on using helmets effectively.
Bilingual Health Information - The information on this site was originally developed for limited literacy Spanish and English speaking patients. It offers basic health, nutrition, and lifestyles information in a context which may be suitable for either students or parents in certain specific settings. Lots of illustrations and minimal use of text help make these resources easy to use.
CPR Instructions - Grades 6-12 - This site offers CPR instructions - both very brief and very detailed - as well as suggestions on where to go to take a complete CPR course. While a course is a more complete approach, this site can be helpful as an introduction to CPR and how it works.
Drug Prevention Strategies - Grades 6-12 - Drug Strategies - This organizations goal is to reduce the demand for drugs through prevention, education, treatment, law enforcement and community outreach programs. This site provides links to resources including publications available to order.
Fact Sheets on Public Health - Grades 9-12 - The American Public Health Association. This site provides comprehensive fact sheets on current issues in public health. Includes legislative information and advocacy networks. Fact sheets can be used for background information for student research or teacher knowledge.
Fast Food Nutrition Finder - Grades 6-12 - Here's an interactive guide to the nutritional content of the menus of more than a dozen fast food chains. Students can enter nutrient ranges and limits and see which selections fit the category. Instructive and fun! From Olen Publishing.
Food Safety Pages - Grades 4-8 - This site from the FDA includes lots of printable PDF files for students of all ages. Topics include refrigeration, how to prepare food safely, and avoiding and dealing with illness caused by food. There are also PDF files for presentations and games for students. Great resource for health and consumer science classes.
Health Profiles by Country - Grades 9-12 - Pan American Health Organization. Includes data from dozens of countries regarding the state of sanitary conditions around the world. Profiles provide comprehensive information on specific health issues and resources available in each country.
HIV and AIDS - By and for Kids - Grades 5-12 - This site was created by a group of students in New Hampshire - with plenty of adult supervision. It includes basic AIDS and HIV information, much of it in a simple question and answer format. The site covers basic information in a straightforward manner, and also includes answers to some unanticipated questions like, "Can I catch feline AIDS from my cat?"
Injury Prevention Web Site - Grades K-12 - This site from Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh offers safety and accident prevention tips for children, teens, parents and guardians, teachers, and health professionals. Children's Hospital has a long tradition of efffective outreach programs to encourage safety and health. This resource is sensibly designed and easy to use.
KidsHealth - Grades 4-8 - KidsHealth is a creation of the A.I. DuPont Clinics and the Nemours Foundation, presenting information on pediatric health for both adults and children. The information for children - linked here - includes simple descriptions of internal organs, animations, and discussions of concepts of hygiene and infection. For adults, there are more detailed discussions of health issues affecting children.
A Map of Your Internal Organs - Grades 3-6 - A clickable map of the internal organs, accompanied by brief descriptions of what each organ does and how they all work together. From the Children's Hospital at the University of Iowa.
Marijuana Facts for Teens - Grades 6-12 - This is the web version of a National Institute for Drug Abuse publication by the same name. It contains factual information on marijuana and why not experimenting is the best strategy. Great site for teens to use in gathering accurate information on a topic replete with less-than-correct information.
Mouthguards - A page from the Dental School at the University of Pennsylvania explains the whos, hows, and whys of using mouthguards for sports and physical activities. Coaches, this one's for you!
Nutrition Café - Grades 4-8 - Here's a useful nutrition site from the Pacific Science Museum. This one includes several thematic quizzes on nutrients and what they do once they're in the body. Students learn the importance of fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, etc., and what can happen if you eat too much or too little of any of these.
Nutrition.Gov - Grades 6-12 - This gateway site from the federal government aims to consolidate a wide range of consumer oriented nutrition information. The information could find various applications in health, consumer science, and nutrition classes.
The Real Truth About Fast Foods and Nutrition - Grade 3-8 - Science/Health/Reading (advertising section) - Help students learn to eat healthy foods, even in the school cafeteria and fast food restaurants as they learn about nutrition and have fun in this student-made web site. Also included is a section on fast food advertising and critical analysis of advertising claims and strategies. Thinkquest Junior Winner: first place, Sports and Health, 1998.
Physical Fitness and Health - A report from the Surgeon General - Grades 9-12 and Teachers - This report from the Surgeon General provides guidelines for physical health and fitness for various age groups, and highlights the importance of regular exercise, proper diet, and healthy lifestyles. Good resource for health classes or helping students discover how fit they may (or may not) be.
Resources for Prevention of Disease - Grades 9-12 - Indiana Prevention Resource Center at Indiana University. Includes excellent information on disease prevention relative to adolescents and young adults. Specific information on alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs used by children and adolescents. A great tool for awareness. Award winning site.
Resources for Specific Diseases - Grades 9-12 - The Minority Health Network. This site offers background information and resources on asthma, cancer, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and infectious diseases.
School Health Manual - Teachers - This is a complete copy of the school health manual for the State of Maine, listed as a series of Adobe Acrobat files. It provides comprehensive sections on a wide range of medical and psychological conditions and their management in school settings. The information is clearly organized, making it easy for teachers and others without medical training to find specific information. Great resource!
Smoking Education Resources from the CDC - This site includes a nice set of resources for all grade levels, including the recently-released report on smoking and women. There are also specific resources for coaches, school health professionals, and others who work with young people. Some of these tools can be downloaded directly.
Sports and Nutrition - Grades 9-12 - The University of Illinois developed this site to help high school athletes learn how to use nutrition to their competitive advantage. The site offers basic nutritional information as well as guidelines for eating habits that will help athletes get the nutrition and energy they need for competition. Nicely presented, with easily accessible information.
The Telehealth Project - Grades 9-12 - This British site gives lesson plans and access to resources for a high school health curriculum. Topics include self-care, dating and relationships, addictions, steroid use, eating behaviors, depression and more. E-mail is available to the professional who wrote the particular lesson plan.
Tobacco Free Kids Corner - Grades 5-12 - This site has lots of reasons to not start smoking, complete with endorsements from a variety of popular teen personalities.
Vince & Larry's Safety City - Grades 3-6 - The National Highway & Traffic Safety Administration offers a site about safety for kids. It includes tips on safety when riding a bike, a school bus, crossing a street, riding in a car, etc. Lots of spiffy graphics mixed in with the information. Strictly for kids.
