Isabel AllendeGrades 9-12 - Information, criticism and links on the works of Chilean writer Isabel Allende. The site contains pictures and biography of the author of such works as "The House of Spirits" and "Fortune’s Daughter."

Jane Austen - Grades 9-12 - Contains much helpful information on Jane Austen and her times. Links to e-texts of various novels, including juvenilia. Links to discussions of novels, letters, quotes, biographies, on-line academic articles and info on the Jane Austen Society. Witty Miss Austen herself would approve of the site-- there's even a Jane Austen joke section!

Jane Austen - Grades 9-12 - Another Austen site, this one from the University of Texas.

Samuel Beckett - Grades 9-12 - This section of from themodernword.com offers a very complete look at the life and work of author Irish playwright Samuel Beckett. He is best known for his play Waiting for Godot. The site offers biographical and critical content, some of which will be beyond the reach of some students. This is a great place for lesson-planning content.

William Blake Archive - Grades 9-12 - This is a scholarly site at the University of Virginia which offers bibliographies, images, and texts of William Blake’s works. A text and image search allows students to locate specific references to characters, objects and ideas in the texts. Many good links to related material.

Some William Blake on the Web - Grades 9-12 - This worthwhile site contains information and links to artistic and literary work of William Blake.

The Robert Burns Encyclopedia - Grades 9-12 - This site purports to have all things Robert: poetry, history, commentary. Some of the content may be a bit steep for students, but this is a very complete collection of information about one of Scotland's finest.

Lewis Carroll in the Classroom, Grades 6-12. Make your English classes come alive! Bring the classic work of Lewis Carroll into your classroom to jazz up your grammar lessons. Great, practical lessons for teachers.

geoffreychaucer.orgGrades 9-12 - This site attempts to "sift and sort" the vast amount of Chaucer material on the net. There’s background, bibliography, biography and commentary with links and outlines on the Chaucer canon.

Geoffrey Chaucer Web Site - AP Students - This is the web home for Harvard University's Chaucer courses. It offers interpretive information and historical context for each section of Canterbury Tales, along with synopses of the various sections. Interesting, useful information for motivated students.

 

pzl-tiny.gif (1418 bytes) Dante's Infernal Grammar - Grades 9-12 and AP - This TeachersFirst exclusive offers high school teachers a way to teach a literary classic and prepare their students for the SAT II. The ten-part literature unit explores Dante's Inferno and then offers lessons on ten devilish grammar topics that appear on the SAT II test. Wonderful resource for literature study, grammar lessons, or test preparation. The various elements can be used together or individually.

Digital Dante Grades 9-12 – This is a comprehensive resource on Dante and his works. The site provides links to e-texts, scholarly articles, biographies and bibliographies. A special "image collections" section offers a fantastic group of visuals related to Dante and his world. Source: Columbia University Institute for Learning Technologies.

Dickens - Grades 6 and up - Probably the most complete Dickens site, with text, context, games, and other links. This site is constantly updated, so it's worth a look anytime you encounter Dickens in your curriculum.

Dickens Does the U.S. - Grades 6-12 - Did you know that Dickens travelled in the United States? This site from the University of Virginia presents a complete text of American Notes - the resulting work, along with commentary and visuals. This is a great site for experiencing Dickens in another context. Students can compare Dickens' perceptions with those of Americans.

The Charles Dickens Page - Grades 6-12 - Here's another visually pleasing Dickens site. This one includes references to Dickens' travels in America, historical background on Victorian London, and notes and commentary on the author's various works.

Dickens Author Unit - Grades 6-8 - This author unit offers a look at Dickens, his environment, and his works. The unit includes a number of Internet links, and a "house tour" comparing Dickens' digs with those students would find today.

F.M. Dostoevsky -- Grades 9-12 -- This site was created by faculty and students at Middlebury College who admire the writing of Dostoevsky. You’ll find a biography of the author’s life as well as reading guides to some of his most famous works. Use them as class lesson plans or individual tutorials.

Dostoevsky: The Brothers Karamazov -- Grades 9-12 -- This site contains the complete text of The Brothers Karamazov.

Arthur Conan Doyle - 221 Baker Street - Grades 6-12 - Here's an e-text collection of Sherlock Holmes stories that are in the public domain, along with artwork and links to other Holmes sites. Good starting point for someone interested in sampling these great detective stories.

Golding, William - Lord of the Flies - Grades 9-12 - This is a lesson plan from the California SCORE series. These lessons require that students use the Internet to complete the lesson.

Huxley, Aldous - Lesson plan for Brave New World - Grades 9-12 - This is a lesson plan from the California SCORE series. These lesson plans require students to access Internet resources as part of the lesson.

Joyce, James - A James Joyce Web Site - Grades 9-12 - This still-emerging site lists a variety of sources, commentary, and study guides for Joyce's works, and provides additional links for further investigation.

James Joyce - The Brazen Head - Grades 9-12 - The James Joyce section of themodernword.com offers a very complete look at Joyce's life and works. Some of the content will be beyond many students, but the background material can enhance discussion planning and lesson development. Spend some time here if Joyce is on your syllabus.

The Complete Works of John Keats, Grades 9-12. This site offers a comprehensive directory of the poetic works of John Keats. The works are organized by genre and easy for both teachers and students to navigate.

The Keats Exhibition - Grades 9-12 - Source: Portico/The British Library. This site contains selected poetical texts, portraits and critical commentaries of English Romantic poet John Keats. A useful introduction to the poet and his life.

D. H. Lawrence - Grades 9-12 - This is a Belgian site - in English - which examines Lawrence's writing as a reflection of Victorian morals and culture. It includes biography, lesson and writing ideas, and a few links to other Lawrence resources. Navigation is a bit confusing, but the site raises difficult issues in thoughtful fashion.

D. H. Lawrence Criticism - Grades 9-12 - This page from the University of Nottingham, England contains a number of critical resources for those studying Lawrence's works. It is part of a larger site which may also be of use to teachers or students.

Lewis, C.S. - Into the Wardrobe - A site discussing C.S. Lewis and his works, created and maintained by the author's step-son.

Lowry, Lois - The Giver - Grades 6-8 - This lesson plan is from the SCORE series developed in California. It requires use of the Internet for students to complete the materials.

Lowry, Lois - Teacher's Guide for The Giver - Grades 6-8 - This is McDougall-Littel's guide for their edition of the book. It offers introductory context, as well as brief lesson guides and study suggestions.

Marlowe, Christopher - Dr. Faustus - Grades 11-12 - TeachersFirst explores Marlowe's Dr. Faustus, and shows how Faust's search for power can resonate with today's teenagers. This complete unit includes nine lessons, handouts, and references.

The Milton Reading Room - Grades 9-12 - This page offers links to a number of Milton's major works. It is part of a larger site created for an English literature course at Dartmouth College. Useful as an introductory exposure to Milton's work.

George Orwell's Animal Farm - Grades 6-12 - This ThinkQuest site offers a background presentation on Orwell's book along with study questions and topics for reflection. Much of the presentation describes the circumstances of the Russian revolution of 1917 and Stalin's rise to power, setting the stage for the allegory and satire in Orwell's text. The entire presentation is also available for downloading as a Powerpoint® presentation.

Animal Farm - Teaching Guide - Grades 6-12 - This is McDougall Littel's teacher's guide for the Animal Farm. It includes brief study ideas and questions, along with introductory context information.

George Orwell - 1984 - Sparknotes - Teachers - The Sparknotes presentation of plot summary and study concepts for Orwell's book. About Sparknotes.

Paton, Alan - Cry the Beloved Country - Grades 9-12 - This is a lesson plan for Cry the Beloved Country from the California SCORE collection. These lessons require students to use the Internet in order to complete the lesson.

Remarque, Erich Maria - All Quiet on the Western Front - Grades 9-12 - This lesson unit from the California SCORE series offers six different activities based on this famous novel about World War I. The activities draw on students' writing, artistic, speaking, and analytical talents to explore the work in additional detail. There are Internet links to support each activity.

The Plays of Shakespeare - TeachersFirst's own guide to the Shakespeare plays commonly encountered in the high school curriculum. Includes web resources, e-texts, lesson plans, multi-media materials, and student-developed projects.

The Shakespeare Web - DNA Productions - English: Grades 9-12 - Though it is no longer actively maintained, this site includes some entertaining ways to hook students on Shakespeare, such as Today in Shakespeare History, a daily calendar with a page of quotes from Shakespeare for every day of the year. On March 15, read the famous lines from Julius Caesar! Use the magnetic poetry page to find new ways to put Elizabethan English words into original poems on your computer screen.

The Sherlockian Holmepage is a wonderful resource for those teaching any of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories. The resources here are nearly endless and are all Holmes-related.  It's a great resource for teachers and also for students who are Holmes fans.

Romantic Circles - Target: Senior high - This very useful site provides information on Romantic-period literature and culture. Its resources continue to expand. An interesting feature is the Villa Diodati, a five -room MOOspace. Named for the house rented by Lord Byron and the Shelleys in the summer of 1816, the space provides for panel discussions and conversations. The Romantic Circles site already provides conferences, publications, scholarly resources, reviews and electronic editions, with more features on the way. Robert Louis Stevenson - Grades 8-12 - Here's a good place to start if you need information on Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde author Robert Louis Stevenson. There are bibliographies and biographies, images, critical commentaries and info on Stevenson associations and clubs and museum and library collections.

Swift - Gulliver's Travels - Grade: 9-12 - Contains the full text of Gulliver's Travels by Jonathan Swift. Also included are study/research sections that offer additional information and web sites for literature research.

The J.R.R. Tolkien Information PageGrades 8-12 - Source: Eric Lippert - Billed as the "one-stop shopping site for all Tolkien on the net," this location seems to deliver what it advertises! Interesting and well designed, it offers links to articles, chat, and Middle Earth info.

The Works of Tolkien - Grades 6-12 - Fans of the Hobbit and the Tolkien trilogy will appreciate this Flash-enhanced site about the author, his writings, and his art. There are text, sound, and video files, along with a variety of other information. Lots of runes; lots of fun, and a great introduction to a collection that is enjoying a resurgence of popularity.

One Ring - J.R.R. Tolkien Online - Grades 6-12 - The film version of the first part of the Tolkien trilogy has raised interest in all things Middle Earth. This metasite lists a number of Tolkien resources that range from trivial to substantial. Teachers may find the content helpful in capitalizing on current interest to make connections between hobbits, elves, and other literature.
