pdficon.gif (272 bytes)Japan - Images of a People - Grades 6-12 - This site, from the Smithsonian Institution's "Art to Zoo" series, offers a complete introduction to Japan and its arts, including discussion ideas and lesson activities. All materials are available as downloadable Adobe Acrobat PDF files, so you can print out the entire unit. (A color printer works best, of course.) You can download the Adobe Acrobat reader from the TeachersFirst Toolbox.

The Japanese-American Historical Society - Grades 6-12 - Though its focus is by no means entirely on World War II, that war was no doubt the most trying time for Japanese Americans. This site contains numerous resources on the experiences of Japanese Americans during the war, as well as other resources highlighting the accomplishments of Japanese Americans and their efforts to preserve their ethnic heritage.

Kids Web JapanGrades 3 and up. - This site is available in 7 languages! This is an excellent site to learn the culture and history of Japan. Topics included are; regions, climate, politics/government, schools, industry, history, folklore, etc. There is a wealth of information and is presented in an interesting and appropriate manner. There is even a Language Lab and a Japanese cookbook. Great for multicultural studies! This site is sponsored by JTN (Japan)

Japanese Castles - Grades 4-8 - This is a very simple collection of images of ancient Japanese castles grouped by location. The author provides basic introductory text, as well as links to other content for some of the listings. While there's little instructional content here, the images themselves could be very useful as supplements to a study of Japanese history.

Nippon in the World - Grades 9-12 - This Japanese site offers a collection of classical Japanese artwork, suitable for study as part of an exposure to Japanese history. The interface isn't the greatest, and the images contain watermarks, but the site works fine as an example of the unique nature of Japanese artistic representations.

Residence Of The Prime Minister Of Japan - Grade level: 9-12 - Source: Official residence of the Prime Minister - Special features: bilingual - This site has info on the Prime Minister of Japan. It includes his reports, speeches, policies, press conferences, budgets, etc. It also contains statistical information on Japan which may be useful. One interesting area is the opinion section.

Tokugawa Japan - Teachers and AP Students - This site is devoted to the study of Japan in the 17th-19th centuries, during the Tokugawa Shogunate. Written at college level, it documents the cultural, political, and military history of the period in significant detail. Good resource for serious high school research, or for teachers who need background on the evolution of Japanese culture, especially regarding Japanese reactions to Western influence.

Remembering World War II - TeachersFirst's new collection of resources dealing with World War II includes materials for grades 6 and up dealing with all facets of the conflict.

The Way of the Horse and Bow - Grades 5-12 - This site offers a basic introduction to the Japanese Samurai warrior and the role of the Samurai in Japanese history. The images and text offer an overview of the role of these Japanese knights in Japanese society as well as a discussion of some of the customs and traditions that grew up around the Samurai.
