Prism is a tool for "crowdsourcing interpretation" of text. Create your own Prism or browse through Prisms available on the site. To create a Prism, add text and choose options for highlighting such as red for demonstrating foreshadowing or blue for feminism. Before finishing, add the title and author and include credit for the work using their drop-down tool providing options. Watch the introductory video, which resides on YouTube, for a full overview of how to create and use Prism. If your district blocks YouTube, the video may not be viewable. You could always view the video at home and bring it to class "on a stick" to share. Use a tool such as KeepVid, reviewed here, to download the video from YouTube.

tag(s): collaboration (4), DAT device agnostic tool (193), literature (275), reading comprehension (114)

In the Classroom

Use Prism to explore text collaboratively with your students. Paste in portions of any text and have students highlight indicated features or ask them to highlight areas of confusion. Students will need a Prism account; however, their work is anonymous when added to Prisms. Use the completed Prisms to assess student understanding and as a springboard for classroom discussions. Use across the curriculum to highlight and interpret texts in all subjects. Create Prisms for newspaper articles from different sources, have students highlight factual information, then compare and contrast information found using an online tool such as Interactive Two Circle Venn Diagram, reviewed here. If students cannot have their own email accounts, consider using a "class set" of Gmail subaccounts, explained here; this tells how to set up Gmail subaccounts to use for any online membership service. Using Gmail subaccounts will provide anonymous interaction within your class.

Use up to 1500 characters without registering. Register for free using your email to use unlimited characters. Choose the reading level you want to assign to the text, then click submit. Wordie analyzes the text and provides two boxes with word banks. The first includes vocabulary applicable to that reading level, the second displays included words above that level. Uncheck any boxes next to words you prefer not to include as vocabulary. Use the Print Preview to create a printable including the entire text with vocabulary to learn in a featured word box.

Teachers can create and deliver classroom content online with this free, easy-to-use web application. As a teacher, staying organized can be a challenge. Keep all of your units and lesson plans in one place with Cloudschool. Students can access course content at any time via URL on any device without logging in. After creating an account, design courses with individual lessons using content you select and upload based on school standards. Add lessons, homework, assignments, even embed Google Docs and other content; then "publish" some, or all of the content. Your account is a personal education website called a Teaching Space whose URL you share with others. After logging in, use the Dashboard to navigate and easily manage all your Courses and Lessons. Mark courses with a tag so they will come up for anybody who visits your Teaching Space, or password protect your Lessons. Share with other teachers or students by sending Lessons and Courses via email. Download lessons as Word docs. Students can only interact via class discussions you set up and monitor in the lessons. As a simple learning management system, Cloudschool facilitates delivery of curricular content, and keeps you organized with your lessons and units. Find them easily next year! While free for individuals, there is a charge for institutions.

tag(s): classroom management (130), teaching strategies (25)

In the Classroom

Watch the short videos on the landing page to see how Cloudschool works; once signed up, you will have access to the very complete Help section. Within each course, create and distribute text-based or multimedia lessons containing a variety of formats which may be embedded, including audio, video, PDFs, and worksheets. Add discussion questions to all Lessons for students to reply to within your course environment. Use toolbars at the top as main controls for each page for easy navigation and creation. The left-side navigation menu links to Courses, Lessons, Curriculum Lists, and Files. Helpful tips appear by hovering over buttons. Click into a Course to add a new Lesson, then choose a Template, or use the Create New Lesson button. A Plus button at the top center of the page adds text, images, audio, and video to your lesson. Include homework, student discussion, assignments, and assessments which students submit outside of the Cloudschool environment. Notifications are available. After creating lessons, use your Teaching Space to give large or small group in-class presentations. Consider putting a bookmark on classroom computers to the lesson the students are to work on. You could also share the lessons on your class website. Share lesson plans with colleagues and administrators. Cloudschool is useful for any teacher to organize content and deliver it easily to individual students in class or at home as part of blended or flipped classroom environments. No classroom management tools are available since students do not register.

Originally a desktop application, and now available on mobile devices, too, SuperNotecard is a virtual note-taking tool based on the traditional 3 x 5 note-cards concept. After creating an account, start a Project where you'll add note cards. Enter text via a simple text editor window. Flexible features allow cards to be edited, moved, and graphically notated. Cards may be organized by Decks, Categories, and tied to Reference source cards with built-in citation help. Simple tutorials will help you get started. Share projects by email. Exporting and importing work is possible. There are templates for fiction, nonfiction, script and flash cards. This site does have a slight learning curve. After five free projects, the cost is $25 per year, but projects may be deleted to stay within the free limit. There is an informative tutorial, created by a high school teacher, available on YouTube. If your district blocks YouTube, the video may not be viewable. You could always view the video at home and bring it to class "on a stick" to share. Use a tool such as KeepVid, reviewed here, to download the video from YouTube.

In the Classroom

With the emphasis in many state standards on gathering information from multiple sources, citing textual evidence in reading and writing, and producing argumentative writing and research, students need help in note-taking skills and citing sources. This tool will be useful to teach outlining, note-taking, and organizing. On an interactive whiteboard, or with a projector, demonstrate how to create a project, edit, and organize. The whole class or small groups can work together on one device to outline and gather facts and quotes from a writing sample. Students with email may share their projects with teachers or other students who import a copy into their accounts. Export Project files to review off line. The Flash Card option creates a study tool individuals or groups may use. Help is minimal, but a Community Forum shares usage questions and answers.

After clicking "Create a New Quiz" you can upload a CVS spreadsheet or simply type in the words. Clicking Help, Example, or Submit will bring up directions for the exact formatting needed to have for the successful creation of a quiz. Don't forget to title your quiz! Save the URL or bookmark it to share it with others. Tip: when clicking the cards they ding. You may want to turn the sound down on the computer.

In the Classroom

Use LearnCube to offer personalized instruction to small groups of students or homebound students without access to school lessons. Because LearnCube's free plan only allows for classrooms of six students, be creative in using this site for your whole class. Divide students into six groups, each of whom becomes "a student" in your virtual room. If you teach multiple classes, create a common login for each different class to become a student, or use the Gmail workaround, explained here, to set up Gmail subaccounts to use for any online membership service.

Finally, worksheets will be cool! Create interactive worksheets, or use one that is already developed and make it your own with wizer.me. After signing up with email get started with Add Task. Follow the prompts for creation; these include selecting text style and color, and choosing a background, adding student tasks (Text, Video, Link, Image), and more. Select question style: Open Question, Multiple Choice, Matching, and more. Then there are the more unusual type responses like Filling in a Table, Image Tagging, Embedding, and others, with promises of more to come. Share with students by posting the URL given, using a pin code on their worksheet board, or use your Google Classroom account. At the time of this review, wizer.me support was through email and real-time online chat.

In the Classroom

Wizer.me would be an excellent tool to use to implement and/or integrate technology into lessons. Look through worksheets others have created to get an idea of what you can do. The possibilities for using this tool in the classroom are limited only by your imagination! Having students view videos or label images is sure to keep them engaged and interested in your subject. Any subject area teacher will find a use for this tool, and it's free! Use worksheets (lessons) you have created in learning centers, with small groups (the possibilities for differentiating abounds), or as homework. Since these "worksheets" can include video, using wizer.me would be a terrific tool to use to "flip" your classroom.
