Earn rewards for studying with Termling. This free interactive combines role-playing elements with study activities to assist students in learning vocabulary and terms with flashcards, quizzes, and other study activities. Create your Termling avatar and enroll to start using the site's tools. Earn additional features through gameplay. Once enrolled, use options to find or create your own study sets and invite other members to be Study Buddies. Educators can personalize study sets to assign to students and monitor progress.

In the Classroom

Introduce Termling to your class and demonstrate the different features available. Create study materials for individuals to differentiate learning. Have students set up and share their own study materials. Show students how to read carefully through their classroom notes and underline the most important word or words in a sentence. Then have them leave out the most important words for their flashcards. Learning support teachers might want to have small groups create cards to review together before tests. Have students create flashcard sets as a follow-up activity to "test" classmates on what they "teach" in oral reports.

Originally a desktop application, and now available on mobile devices with browsers, too, SuperNotecard is a virtual note-taking tool based on the traditional 3 x 5 note-cards concept. After creating an account, start a Project where you'll add note cards. Enter text via a simple text editor window. Flexible features allow cards to be edited, moved, and graphically notated. Cards may be organized by Decks, Categories, and tied to Reference source cards with built-in citation help. Simple tutorials will help you get started. Share projects by email. Exporting and importing work is possible. There are templates for fiction, nonfiction, script and flash cards. This site does have a slight learning curve. After five free projects, the cost is $25 per year, but projects may be deleted to stay within the free limit. There is an informative tutorial, created by a high school teacher, available on YouTube. If your district blocks YouTube, the video may not be viewable. You could always view the video at home and bring it to class "on a stick" to share. Use a tool such as KeepVid, reviewed here, to download the video from YouTube.

With the emphasis in many state standards on gathering information from multiple sources, citing textual evidence in reading and writing, and producing argumentative writing and research, students need help in note-taking skills and citing sources. This tool will be useful to teach outlining, note-taking, and organizing. On an interactive whiteboard, or with a projector, demonstrate how to create a project, edit, and organize. The whole class or small groups can work together on one device to outline and gather facts and quotes from a writing sample. Students with email may share their projects with teachers or other students who import a copy into their accounts. Export Project files to review off line. The Flash Card option creates a study tool individuals or groups may use. Help is minimal, but a Community Forum shares usage questions and answers.

Quizlet Live is a classroom quiz game for groups created by the makers of Quizlet, reviewed here. Follow directions to create and share a quiz set and assign to student teams. At least six students are needed to create a Quizlet Live game. When students receive the code and log in, they find other team members and begin competing. Accuracy is encouraged over speed, providing a wrong answer will send teams back to start from the beginning of the quiz.

They could add their own information by including their code-name on notes. This tool would be perfect for adding student accountability to the flipped classroom!

Follow the prompts for creation; these include selecting text style and color, and choosing a background, adding student tasks (Text, Video, Link, Image), and more. Select question style: Open Question, Multiple Choice, Matching, and more. Then there are the more unusual type responses like Filling in a Table, Image Tagging, Embedding, and others, with promises of more to come. Share with students by posting the URL given, using a pin code on their worksheet board, or use your Google Classroom account. At the time of this review, wizer.me support was through email and real-time online chat. Wizer.me works on any device with a browser and Internet connection but works best on Chrome and Safari.

Wizer.me would be an excellent tool to use to implement and/or integrate technology into lessons. Look through worksheets others have created to get an idea of what you can do. The possibilities for using this tool in the classroom are limited only by your imagination! Having students view videos or label images is sure to keep them engaged and interested in your subject. Any subject area teacher will find a use for this tool, and it's free! Use worksheets (lessons) you have created in learning centers, with small groups (the possibilities for differentiating abounds), or as homework. Since these "worksheets" can include video, using wizer.me would be a terrific tool to use to "flip" your classroom.

Make a class challenge! Create practice quizzes to review the material just learned in class. Use an interactive whiteboard or projector for students to view the "leaderboard" (teacher dashboard) as in a game. Students score more points by answering questions quickly. As with other tools where there is a leaderboard, it is helpful to have a collaborative environment where competition is not the goal, instead working together and improving is important. Use Quizalize as a formative assessment and to differentiate to see what material needs more review with classes (or individual students). Use this tool often to obtain a snapshot of each student's understanding of content; quickly see who understands a concept and who needs some individualized practice. Print a report for each student to use as a guide once the class has started learning the topic. If you use Zzish with your Google Classroom or Office 365 account, you can export quizzes as PDF files. Share with students as a resource for creating quizzes for studying at home. When students are using surveys and polls for reports, introduce them to Quizalize since it works on any device. Share quizzes with your fellow teachers.

This word cloud generator is similar to other word clouds except it includes a fascinating mathematical twist. Enter any URL or text to begin a word cloud, and then start playing with the different options. In addition to changing the font, take the time to play with the angle parameters. Move the arrowheads and rotate to view different orientations of the same text. Other options limit the number of words, the amount of words per line, or spiral and scale of the image. When finished, download and save the image as a PNG or SVG file. Jason Davies' Word Cloud Generator works on any device with a modern browser and Internet access.

In the Classroom

Use the Bingo Card Creator to create Bingo games to review any topic with small groups. Instead of saying the word that is on the Bingo card, give the definition (so students must find the term) or a math problem whose answer is among those on the card. Create sight word bingo cards for younger students and ESL/ELL students. Bingo is an excellent review tool for science or social studies. Put a short description of a vocabulary word into the space. Tell students the name of the vocabulary word and see if they can find it on the Bingo card. Alternatively, do the reverse and write the vocabulary word on the card and read the definition to the class. Encourage students to create bingo games for each other as a review or to engage the audience during oral presentations. Learning support teachers can create them together with students as an engaging way to review. World language teachers (and students) can create bingo cards to reinforce vocabulary.
