YouTube Teachers and the related YouTube EDU form an education-oriented area of YouTube that categorizes videos into subjects for easy retrieval. YouTube is a vast online video library. You upload, view, share, and comment on content found on the site. Videos found on the full YouTube range from commercial to educational content. YouTube often has questionable content so is blocked in many schools. Some schools block YouTube simply because streaming video "hogs" network resources. If inappropriate content is your administration's main concern, YouTube offers a way your tech department can configure a limited access channel. See the explanation video and related information to share with the tech department here.

YouTube is very valuable to educators looking for great educational content. There are videos for early elementary concepts like safety up through college level courses. YouTube has the ability to stream content into channels based upon your viewing preferences, and videos are easily marked as "favorites" to find in your history. It offers suggested channels based on your watching history including trending and popular videos. Parents can filter out objectionable content and comments using Safety Mode -- which is often disabled.

Create a YouTube channel to collect videos for easy access by students. Upload teacher-created videos for your class to your channel. Do you know a great video not featured on You Tube EDU? Suggest it for the EDU collection.

There are tools that allow you to download, clip, or display You Tube videos without all of the "see other" video recommendations, comments, etc. These tools include KeepVid reviewed here, TubeChop, SnipSnip.it, VIewPure, and SafeShare.

tag(s): video (254)

In the Classroom

Use YouTube Teachers/EDU to create a channel of appropriate videos for your class. Consider creating your own videos of content that can be uploaded to your YouTube channel. Use videos to introduce topics, dig deeper into the content, and review for exams. You may even want to try "flipping" you class so students view the video information as homework and practice with concepts in class the next day. Students can be given the task of finding suitable videos that take the content deeper for better understanding. Create video guides that go with the videos or quizzes that can be given at the end. Assign videos for students to view and give them time to use the information to create a presentation for the rest of the class.

Poster My Wall is a simple online tool to create posters. Make and download simple posters for free and without registration. Note that free downloads are not high-quality print resolution, so they may appear "fuzzy" if printed in large formats. The simple tools look and feel like a computer program. Choose or upload photos, backgrounds, Flickr photos, and clip-art. You can move and re-size using the floating symbols. Register to be able to email products to friends. (Registration requires email, but there is no waiting for a confirmation.) Obtain the poster url by emailing to yourself. (In the email, click "view larger" to get the link). Check out the reviewer sample here .

tag(s): collages (17), posters (36)

In the Classroom

Have students create posters to demonstrate understanding. After an assigned reading, have them create a poster to explain the text. Have students email their finished product to you as an informal assessment. Create a quick presentation of the best posters to share with the class when discussing the reading the next day. Offer posters as one of several options for students to share what they know with you and their peers. Of course, you will want to require proper credit for any images students use in their posters. Use student-made posters to reinforce class rules at the start of the year or to visually display concepts such as branches of government or story elements.

Send email messages as video with this easy to use tool. Sometimes information is just too hard to convey in an email. Perhaps the information is too complicated to type out or it is hard to relay the tone in a message. Sending an email with a video message helps to take care of these problems. To use the site you will need to create a free account. Once the account is created, just login, record or upload your video message, and send. Your recipient will receive an email letting them know they have a new video message. Just one click will get them to the message for viewing.

tag(s): organizational skills (122), video (254)

In the Classroom

Have fun with this website, and make classwork more interesting for students! Create a classroom email account, and have students send short summaries of reading passages instead of writing reports. If your students have school email accounts, send a short video message each week including reminders of upcoming activities and reminders for items to bring to class. Teacher mentors can send encouraging videos to mentees with suggestions and classroom tips. Administrators can send videos to staff with reminders of staff meetings or upcoming due dates. Send a short video to parents with upcoming class information such as conferences, field trips, and testing dates. Appoint a new video master each week to record the homework reminders for the class. That is one classroom "job" elementary students will love to have, especially those who like being the center of attention.

Add narration to any of your PowerPoints, documents, photos, video clips, podcasts, etc. You simply upload your content and add the audio by phone, microphone, or an MP3 upload. Brainshark has a patented system that will guide you through the process. Instantly you will have voice-enriched online video presentations. You'll receive your presentation link via email. You and your students will be able to view the presentations on a computer or by using the free Brainshark App on your Android, iPhone, or iPad,

tag(s): podcasts (52), slides (63), video (254)

In the Classroom

Consider adding your voice to your PowerPoint, Keynote, or Prezi (reviewed here) lectures and posting them online for students to use as a review before a big unit test. Or, use Brainshark and add your voice to your PowerPoint or Keynote lectures for substitutes to use when you have to be out of the classroom. Have your students use Prezi (reviewed here), PowerPoint, or another program to create a book trailer, or any other type of presentation. Brainshark will animate the presentation and then the creator can add their own voices, and music to create a professional looking video. Allow shy students or those with speech difficulties to pre-narrate presentations without the stress of all those eyes staring at them. If you have students who create stellar examples you would like to retain for another school year, ask them to narrate their presentations for an archive you can keep and share next year.

Professors, teachers of online courses, and teachers at alternative high schools may want their students to use Brainshark for presentations and submit them to you. This would be a rather unique way to get to know those students you don't get to "see" very often!

At this publishing site for secondary students, you have many opportunities to learn the craft, view other writers in action, have work critiqued, and interact with other student writers. You can take a master class with featured writers that include conversations with authors discussing their challenges and triumphs. There is a chat forum to post work and get input from fellow students with suggestions for revision (participation in chat requires registration to the site; however, the chat logs can be viewed without registration). An online portfolio can be created after registration on the site. The "Authors in Action" section is a wonderful resource to view short videos of student authors performing their own work and is sorted by genres.

Have students read their own finished works of writing and share them using a tool such as SchoolTube reviewed here. If you do Writers Workshop in your classroom, use videos and information from the site to demonstrate writing and critiquing methods.

The free version of the website allows you to store up to 15 minute presentations, record 10 times a month, and use 50 MB of storage space. This would be a great way to deliver distance presentations or enhance your online teaching. If you are shy about presenting in person, record without the crowd!

Try using present.me to create lectures using your existing PowerPoint presentations. Share the link on your webpage or wikispace. This way, students can spend homework time completing notes and acquiring basic information. You can use classroom time to have students do hands on activities or laboratories. It is a great way to maximize the time you have to teach your content and intensify the impact by having students use the information to better understand it. Prepare a presentation to share with parents at back to school night. Challenge students to create their own presentations, rather than completing a traditional research project. Shy students may be more comfortable recording a presentation in advance.

Dragontape allows you to create editable sequences of video and sound from different online sources, including YouTube. You can create up to a three hour long playlist of videos and music, and share them through both URL and embed codes. Embed multiple videos in ONE box or page. You can add new clips during the playback. If you have a Twitter account, you can gather clips from feeds of those you follow and enjoy. You can trim and use the fade feature on video clips for more seamless viewing. Basically, you can create your own online "bookcase" for web based videos. This is a great collaborative tool for merging videos, and it is so easy to use that the creators have what they call "couch editor mode." This means you do not have to do anything but DRAG ON to tape, a great online equivalent to the tape recorders of the past.

tag(s): sounds (68), video (254)

In class, register and use this to provide a single link to multiple video clips you can use or assign for a single class period. Pull different sources together to create a more complete and informative video presentation for your students. Or have students create their own Dragontapes for online, multimedia collage projects. Great for any class, but especially great for music, drama, and art classes. Some other project ideas: juxtaposing politicians, critics, authors talking about writing, or anything you want to compare/contrast. Student organizations could create playlists of current music for a school dance, saving money on a DJ as long as the school has the proper sound equipment to amplify the playlist.

By the makers of the language learning software Rosetta Stone, this free site offers language learners an opportunity to have an online pen pal. You can choose to use the chat or email function and practice your language skills in the languages of your choice. After a free registration, you can use either voice chat, written chat, or email. You can share as little or as much information as you choose to in your profile. To begin, simply choose a native language for your language partner as well as the language you would like to use to communicate in! There is the option to choose more than one chat partner as well. With an authentic language partner from another culture the opportunity to learn about culture, idiomatic language, things of interest to young people, etc. is a terrific bonus for you. Develop a network of friends at this site.

Use this site with your world language students. Warning: Due to interaction with the public, be sure to check your school's policy on allowing students to register on a site such as this. We strongly recommend parent permission, as well. Discuss safety issues in advance, such as what to do if the "pal" enters into inappropriate discussions.

If you have a group of students participating, prepare a list of interview questions and have your students make culture reports using the information they gather from their partners. You could give them a choice of presentation tools, so all in the class can learn from the other cultures. Use a presentation tool such as authorSTREAM reviewed here, My Brochure Maker reviewed here, or Bookemon reviewed here.

Students then continue on by finding and answering the questions.

Note: QR code readers exist for every type of phone and are easily found on the Internet. For computers, add-ons exist for Firefox and Chrome as well as a desktop application from Adobe.

In the Classroom

Use to make any class content into a treasure hunt for knowledge. Keep students engaged by creating learning centers that have a question requiring an answer and perhaps another activity at the center before going on to the next. Have students learn and answer questions about mystery objects, art prints, or books/authors with accompanying QR codes. Identify trees by creating a QR code with a question about the tree and perhaps another link taking them to specific information. Create a scavenger hunt around the school asking questions about activities in the school or certain student projects found in showcases. (The first QR code could be printed in the school newsletter.) Create a treasure hunt with books in the library to test library search skills or to find a specific book and answer questions from the index, table of contents, etc. Use QR codes on objects in Geometry to ask questions about the shapes or solve a problem based on a physical object. Any subject area and content could find a use for this Treasure Hunt Generator. Challenge students to create their own QR treasure hunts as a way to "present" research projects. Use in social studies for the entire class to create a QR code hunt around your community to bring local history to life for all residents.

In the Classroom

Use this resource for any project or other classroom research where students can benefit from collaborative research. This is a great alternative to meeting at a group member's house or the library. And it saves gas! For students under age 13, use a whole class account and have each group use a different TAB that you set up for them. A how-to video on the site will guide you through set up.

Use Animaps to go beyond Google's My Maps, adding animation. You can add text, multiple location stops, and images to maps. Maps that you make can be shared with anyone or kept private. Connect your Animaps to Facebook and Twitter for direct photo and map sharing. This tool's major advantage is that it adds the factor of time to the map.

In the Classroom

To use this tool, create an account and start playing with the features. There are also tutorials and showcases featured on the site to show what can be done. This would be great for creating time lines in social studies class, showing different places and teaching geography and social studies together. Foreign language students could create maps explaining culture aspects of the language or trace the origins of language. Assign students in math or family consumer sciences to be travel agents and plan vacations, including the costs of the trip.

As part of a book project, have your students show the setting of a novel they are reading, with images that annotate their impression of what the setting looks like. Have students create visual current events, especially for events that take place over time, such as the primaries and Presidential Elections.

In the Classroom

Jazz up your curriculum with sound. Invigorate debates, interviews, reporting, or interviewing with expression and passion. Easily record and share Readers Theater and storytelling with your class, other classes, or even parents. Add personal narratives from students' reports on historical figures, scientists, or community leaders. Add a further dimension into author studies with audio requests using AudioBoom. Autobiographies and biographies can include a much-needed sound component. Blogs, podcasts, and websites easily support these recordings. ESL/ELL teachers might be interested in using this to record their students reading or in conversations and play it back for them so they can critique how well they are doing, or where they need improvement.
