Across the World Once a Week (XW1W) is a teaching idea that uses today's instant technologies to share answers to the same question across the world once a week. XW1W is a simple, social way for students to learn about real life in other cultures from real kids all across the world. By simply "hashtagging" Twitter or blog responses to a weekly question about daily life, students can share and learn about other cultures from their international peers. Join XW1W with your class using a single Twitter account or any blog or wiki tool where you can share student answers to the weekly question. If you cannot access Twitter at school, that is not a problem. You do not even have to use Twitter (though this is a great way dip your toes into Twitter). See the FAQ page for specific hints on using XW1W with your students. Share the XW1W idea with teaching colleagues in other places, and perhaps even with families to try at home. Excite and engage students to jump into learning with tech tools to support direct instruction for vocabulary. Increase the vocabulary in all subjects areas using direct instruction based on Marzano strategies to increase success in school and on achievement tests. Increased vocabulary deepens background knowledge providing a better schemata for different learning experiences. Using the six step approach, discover tech tools to bring the vocabulary from short term memory into long term memory. Discover how the tech tools chosen, can be used to increase student collaboration and provide data for formative assessments. Participants will: 1. Review Marzano's strategies for vocabulary instruction; 2. Explore tools for vocabulary instruction; 3. Learn strategies for student collaboration during vocabulary instruction; and 4. Understand how to create formative assessments for vocabulary using tech tools This session is appropriate for teachers at all technology levels.

If you have an IWB, use it well. These pages, filled with practical ideas and examples for student-directed use of the interactive whiteboard as a collaborative learning space, originally accompanied a presentation by Candace Hackett Shively at the ISTE 2011 conference. Find specific ideas and web tools for making the IWB a student tool and avoiding the trap of being a teacher-Vanna (or Vance). See examples and classroom management tips to share this kinesthetic learning tool among students and leverage its capabilities in student-centered activities. The presentation is brand-agnostic, though some of the examples use SMART brand software (viewable with SMART Notebook Express, a free online tool, reviewed here). There are downloadable handouts and files along with the many suggestions.

This read-aloud collection is part of TeachersFirst's Help I lost my library/media specialist series, written by an experienced elementary library/media specialist. Although nothing can replace the specialized knowledge of a teacher-librarian, this collection of poetry books to read aloud and related activities and lessons will inspire young poets -- even reluctant ones. Invite them to read and write poetry on their own. Find both printable and online resources to extend the poetry reading and writing. This is the perfect read-aloud collection during April, National Poetry Month. If your library does not have the books you want from this list, try using the ISBN numbers to borrow them on interlibrary loan from a public library nearby.

This recording of an OK2Ask online professional development session from July 2015, opens in Adobe Connect. Get to the "Core" of English Language Arts in your K-12 classroom using TeachersFirst resources. Participants will view and explore resources that help develop key literacy and writing skills and address Common Core standards. This fast-paced session will help you find resources that promote reading and writing along with collaboration and integration of science and social studies curriculum. Participants will explore and discuss how resources can be utilized in their classroom. This session is for teachers at ALL Technology Comfort Levels.

As a result of this session and through individual follow-up, teachers will: Locate and explore ideas by exploring at least 10 ELA resources on TeachersFirst; Discover a sampling of web based reading, writing, speaking and listening, and language tools and resources; including reading selections which have questions aligned to Common Core, Common Core writing prompts, word choice/vocabulary resources, common error help, tools for citations and research, writing templates, collaboration and presentation ideas. Teachers will also determine specific TeachersFirst resources for reading, writing speaking and listening, and language resources, collaboration and presentation, appropriate for his/her subject and grade level; Explore and practice with the suggested resources; Consider possible ELA projects including literacy, writing, speaking and listening, and language ideas that students can accomplish in her/his classes using web-based resources; Investigate and discuss lesson ideas offered in reviews and by other participants in the session; and List and discuss curriculum projects or activities students can do with the chosen resources. For follow-up, we hope teachers can Implement one of the provided resources into an upcoming teaching unit or lesson. Applicable ISTE-T standards (2008)*: 1a, c, and d, 2a, b, and c, 3a, b, c and d, 5a ISTE's standards page.
