Dante's Inferno and Infernal Grammar

General Goals:

To acquaint students with Dante's poem The Inferno.
To introduce significant literary terms and allusions connected with The Inferno.
To introduce students to the life and times of Dante.
To review various usage, punctuation and sentence structure skills through "in context" examples.

Instructional Goals:

Students will:

1. Through class discussion and written exercises, students will demonstrate knowledge of Dante Alighieri's life including the political and personal influences on his work.

2. Through class discussion and written exercises, students will demonstrate knowledge of literary images, characters and allusions.

3. Students will react in written assignments to specific sections of The Inferno .

4. Demonstrate knowledge of the following usage, punctuation and sentence structure skills:

Lesson One: Pronouns and their Antecedents

Lesson Two: Parallel Structure

Lesson Three: Agreement of Subject and Verb-- Indefinite Pronouns

Lesson Four: Possessives

Lesson Five: Semi-colon/ Comma use

Lesson Six: Using Commas with Appositives

Lesson Seven: Comma Splice and Fused Sentence

Lesson Eight: Using Affect and Effect

Lesson Nine: Voice: Active and Passive

Lesson Ten: Misplaced Modifiers

5. We have included a two-part quiz which you may wish to use at the end of the unit.
