This "drag and drop" activity challenges students to put fractions in order from the lowest to the highest. Scroll to the bottom of this teacher page to find the activity. The activity continues to offer new numbers and options, so you may "play" as often as you wish. The activity offers a full screen option. There is also a link for reviewing information or introducing the topic (Revision Bite) and an online quiz. The entire interactive is embeddable by copying/pasting the "code" into your class web page or wiki.

tag(s): fractions (239)

In the Classroom

Share this site with your students on your interactive whiteboard or projector. Use the Revision Bite as an anticipatory set for a lesson about fractions. Then use the activities and online quiz as enhancements to your lesson (or even AS the lesson). The site is ready to go, easy to follow, educational, and simple for both teachers and students to use. Why not have students work in groups and create their own interactive fraction activities using PowerPoint (including graphics), or even create their own videos demonstrating fractions and share them on TeacherTube (explained here).

Provide this link in your class newsletter so students can practice fractions at home.

Students will love the pizza fun and other graphics used at this website - check it out. Level 2 is a TERRIFIC way to help students read fraction markings on a ruler, always a challenge for some. Some of the activities require Flash, get it from the TeachersFirst Toolbox page..

Shmoop Pre-Algebra offers students an overview of basic operations, basic geometry, fractions, decimals, ratios, percentages, probability, and algebra including terms and additional websites. This Fraction Webquest entitled "Cooking with Fractions," takes students on a comprehensive journey through computation of fractions. The activities included in the webquest are thorough and engaging.

tag(s): cooking (34), fractions (239)

In the Classroom

Use Cooking with Fractions after introducing computation with fractions. This site would make an excellent review for a test on adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions. Students could work independently or with a partner. After completing the webquest, have students create fraction story problems that go along with cooking and/or food. Maybe include the story problems in a class wiki or an online book using Bookemon, reviewed here.

What's fantastic about this site, is that all the student worksheets are digitally provided on this site, making it easy for students to complete digitally and email to you OR easy to convert them to Google Docs, (reviewed here). Save some trees and get rid of the pile of papers to grade afterwards!

Sample topics include roman numerals, Algebra II, pre-algebra, measurement, absolute value, early childhood math, telling time, money, place value, fractions, decimals, mixed operations, and more! And did we mention, each topic include rich, colorful interactives for students to practice skills! Most topics also include options to specify content (for example, choosing to practice addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division).

In the Classroom

Use these "courses" as reinforcement of concepts, to uncover misconceptions, and to explore interesting topics. Share the activities on your interactive whiteboard or projector. Create learning centers focuses on the specific content of the activities. Have cooperative learning groups (or individual students) explore specific topics and report back to the class. For example, have each group view the activities for a specific body part (blood, brain, hearing, immune system, heart and circulation, skeleton, skin, teeth, and more) and create a multimedia presentation. Have cooperative learning groups create online books using a tool such as Bookemon, reviewed here. Provide this link on your class website for families to explore together.
