Learn grammar and phonics using short video clips. Videos are divided into categories based on phases of learning (phonics/reading levels), high frequency words, and other criteria. Videos are engaging and short enough to keep students interested (most run 2-4 minutes). This site includes everything from learning the alphabet to consonant blends to pronouns and much more. Note that the speaker is not American, so the accent may be different from what young students have heard before. There are app versions of many of the activities.

Primary Resource's English page has useful materials for teaching: phonics, spelling, parts of speech, punctuation, literary terms, handwriting, and writing fiction and non-fiction and much more. There are handouts, presentations, graphic organizers, e-books, and even rubrics for student assessment. These valuable resources come from teachers across the world. Contributions range from catchy mnemonics to help students remember tricky spelling words, SMART board lessons about adjectives, how to use reference materials, and PowerPoint presentations on writing plays from stories. Most activities include a key that indicates the appropriate age group, grade level, or required skill level needed as well as its file format. The key indicates the equivalent United States grade level. The British Key Stages are equivalent to the following age groups; KS 1 = 5to 6 year old, KS 2 = 7 to 11 year old, KS 3 = 12 to 14 year old, and KS 4 = 15 to 16 year old. This site is from the UK, so some of the pronunciations and spellings may differ from those in American English. If you have some of your own literacy resources you treasure, feel free to contribute them to this site. This site does include some unobtrusive advertisements.

This site makes phonics lessons accessible and interesting. This is a great site for ESL and ELL students who may have started learning English in another country using a phonics based approach. Students learn the names of simple letters, their sounds, blends, and simple words while enjoying the pictures and doing it themselves. Audio is also provided as you click on words and/or speaker icons. Although the principles of phonics are explained on the site, non-readers can simply scroll down to the accompanying pictures and try the various examples and "practice sets." This site is also useful for ESL and ELL students stumped by the seeming non-existence of English pronunciation rules. All primary grade level classrooms would benefit from using this site. Sample topics include long and short vowels, vowel rules, letter blends, common words, letter position, and many others.

Share this site with teachers struggling with ELL/ESL or speech/language students who are having pronunciation difficulties. New teachers unschooled in phonics may also find this site beneficial. Use this site with your young students to create a learning center (don't forget the headsets).

This engaging resource offers preschoolers and early literacy learners the opportunity to develop language skills through engaging characters and easy to use games. Three main characters are employed to build word, sound and letter principles. Meet Nina the Naming Newt, Leo the Letter-Loving Lobster, and Reggie the Rhyming Rhino. The interactive activities offer many different choices for each character so students will always be offered different activities and choices. Drag and drop activities are easy for young students to use.

Spice up your Make A Word activities with this easy to use website. Each word has draggable letters that can be used to form as many new words as you can think of. This site is a great timesaver as there is no need to cut letters or find paper and pencil. This may be a little difficult for younger users to organize words as there aren't lines or a spell check to ensure that correct combinations are being formed.

tag(s): phonics (75), spelling (168)

This site would be a great incentive to use with students who are becoming a little bored with paper and pencil forms of this activity. The larger words would be a great way to challenge younger readers or as an intervention with struggling, older readers. Use the words on the interactive whiteboard or projector to model how to look for words within other words and discuss spelling patterns.

This simple-looking online thesaurus is actually MUCH more than a quick-look-up. You can find synonyms, antonyms, similar words, and rhymes for any word you enter. A click on any of the words offered provides the same information for THAT word, sending you on word-paths through the English language. Innocent-looking links at the top of the page also provide hundreds of prompts for blog posts and stories, with enough choices to inspire any writer. Don't let the boring white background and plain-text presentation fool you. This tool has magic powers to make words interesting to almost anyone. The database of words used to generate this thesaurus comes from "the Princeton University WordNet database, the Carnegie Mellon Pronouncing Dictionary, and suggestions from thousands of people on the internet just like you." See a special note to teachers below regarding student behavior!

In the Classroom

Keep this link handy among the resources on your class web page or wiki, and be sure to bring it up on your screen or interactive whiteboard to remind students of the rich tools it offers as you teach grammar, revision, poetry, essay-writing, or even letter and resume writing. With primary grades, share the rhyming words to help teach spelling and phonics! As students share in revising a passage or writing a poem on the interactive whiteboard, have this thesaurus available on another window to model their search for just the right word. Encourage students to look up any new vocabulary or terminology at the start of new science or social studies units so they can gain a broader "sense" of the words themselves through a constellation of synonyms and related words. Help students refine vocabulary by having them rank the various synonyms offered for a certain word, deciding which has the most positive or negative connotations. Offer the writing prompts for student journal or blog posts or creative stories. ESL/ELL students can explore new words with this tool, even practicing the rhyming sounds and noticing their varied spellings. Check out the Big Huge Labs educator account. Easily pre-register students to avoid creating logins, view and download their creations, and view the site advertisement free. You will find information about the Educator Account here.

NOTE: If students enter an inappropriate word, they WILL find classroom-inappropriate terms. As with use of any reference, your students need to know your classroom's consequences of such activity. The options are no different from students looking up body parts or pornographic terms in a print dictionary or on Google.

The general subjects include physical science, life science, earth and space, social studies, math, English, and the human body. Each of the subjects includes 10+ topics. NOTE: Although the videos are listed on this site, they actually "live" elsewhere on the Internet, so some videos may be blocked in your school (those on YouTube, for example). Always pretest to be sure the video you hope to use is accessible at school!

This image-rich website provides over sixty interactive stories for young children to enjoy. Johnnie Wilson, mentor math coach and former 5th grade teacher, has collected several math and language arts links to create several compilations of the "best of the best." The color coded descriptors let you know if the story includes text, pictures, sounds, animations, and videos. Most of these beginning reader stories involve the ABCs and rhyming words. Most of the interactive stories also include interactive phonics and grammar activities. This is a MUST-SEE for primary language arts classes, special education classes, ESL and ELL classes, and others.

Be warned, there are minor unobtrusive advertisements at this website. Nearly all sites require Flash. You can get it from the TeachersFirst Toolbox page..
