Introduction

Teacher will record student responses to the following questions on large chart paper.

Runaway Slaves traveled by night for many reasons. Can anyone share some?

We have learned about the North Star and how it guided the slaves to Canada.

What have we learned about the sun?

We know it's a star that is close and the Earth orbits it.

Why did the slaves wait until spring to escape?

Why is the weather warmer in the spring and summer?

There is another important part of the night sky, the moon.

What shape is the moon?

Why does it look different sometimes?

Draw the shapes of the moon: new moon, crescent moon, first quarter, full moon, third quarter, crescent moon on the chart paper.
