Other TeachersFirst Special Topics Collections

These educator-reviewed resources from TeachersFirst offer audio books so all students, including emerging readers and ESL/ELL learners, can experience literature and other reading selections in audio form to reinforce and inspire literacy skills and enjoyment. Be sure to explore each site, as many include multiple categories of books and different download or listening formats. Some selections are audio only. Others include text to follow on the site as you listen, while others include options to interact with the book by clicking, responding, and watching animations. The helpful reviews suggest ideas for ways to use the audio books in the classroom or outside of school to reinforce literacy skills, improve English skills, or study literature in new ways. Download audio recordings of books and poetry in the public domain (free from copyright issues). All books are read and recorded by volunteers for this site. You need Quicktime to listen on the computer. Get it from the TeachersFirst Toolbox page. Several options are available for downloading, including podcasts. Hear selections read in other languages (Note that the public domain applies in the U.S. and may not in other languages/countries). Users can search for works by category, genre, author, title, or reader. The site welcomes volunteer readers. The collection is constantly growing, so check back often.

In the Classroom

Use these for read-along listening, to help weaker readers or ESL/ELL students, or to practice listening and pronunciation. World language and literature teachers can play poetry or passages from lit texts in class or assign them as homework. Make sure you have headphones or speakers for your computer, if needed. High school club advisers might like to offer this as a service opportunity for students to become readers.

These illustrated and animated online books - organized by level of difficulty - give students a chance to interact with the story and choose what happens next. Project them in the classroom for a "spirit reading" activity, or use to encourage independent reading - at school or at home. Although this site offers stories for readers of three age groups, the best and most interactive stories are in the first section, Books for Young Children. Featuring limited vocabulary and repetition, the stories are well illustrated, and many contain links to riddles, mazes, and coloring books. Requires the Flash plug in. There is NOT sound for the stories, unless your computer has a read-aloud program built in.

This online language lab/library has made classic poems and other literature available for listeners to hear and read. It is searchable by genre, authors, and titles. For younger children, it has nursery rhymes and tongue twisters. Besides literature, it contains non-fiction writings, mostly by political figures as well as famous plays. Difficulty level is indicated for each recording, ranging from beginning to advanced. The audio player is downloadable at the site. Help your learning support students or challenged readers by letting them listen to texts. Recordings are made by volunteers. Your service club may want to help record some texts for fellow students, as well.

Make reading come alive by choosing one of the stories from this kid friendly collection. Preview it first to come up with a few discussion questions for students to think about throughout the reading. Project it on your whiteboard or at a student-run whiteboard center. Clicking on the "listen" icon will let the narrator do the reading, well-paced and expressive. Use the stories to enhance listening comprehension, or assign them for students to read or listen to with headsets from individual computers. If you choose a whole class approach, share a link to the same story on your class web page to enable students to view and listen to it over and over again from home, or to give students who were absent access to it.
