Finding it difficult to "show" your health or biology students how different parts of their cells, bodies, or even toothpaste work? Try this part of the Vimeo site. It has animations of different cellular and molecular processes. The animations are not only factual but they are beautiful as well. Videos are shareable and can be embedded onto websites. The clips are spectacular for entry level biology students to visualize molecular and cellular processes, but the detail and intricacy of the clips makes them extremely suitable for advanced placement biology students.

In the Classroom

Try using "The Crest Dual Action Whitening Mechanism Action" in upper middle to high school level health classes. Show the video on the interactive whiteboard or projector and then talk about different toothpastes and good hygiene practices. Discuss the "why" of keeping teeth healthy. Cross curriculum and have students develop experiments to test different toothpastes. (Have students use unsealed tile pieces instead of their teeth, just in case of allergies, toothbrush availability, etc.) In biology class, show the video of the T4 Bacteriophage on the interactive whiteboard to start a discussion of bacterial viruses or viruses in general. Have students revisit the video at the conclusion of the lesson, and have them make podcasts of the bacteriophage invasion process using PodOmatic (reviewed here). Try taking screen shots using a website like Jing (reviewed here) to capture different parts of the video to create an enhanced podcast. Just remember: give credit to where it is due. Another thought on how to use videos like this is to embed one on your website, especially during weeks where classes are interrupted by school events or testing, and have students participate in an online discussion of the video. It keeps them thinking about biology even when they are not physically able to be in class!

Are your students loosing the same number of teeth as children in other parts of the world? Seize the moment and embark on a global collaborative tooth tally project. Students will learn how to gather data and share their findings with an international community of peers. This project intertwines math skills, storytelling, geography, and descriptive writing. The creator Lynda Smith requires that teachers join her wiki and register for the project by February 1. The wiki is where participants post all class work, photos, data, and comments.

In the Classroom

This site is a good way to embark on global collaborative projects with your class. Lynda Smith provides lesson ideas, clear directions, newsletter updates, handouts, and links for further enrichment. All participants collaborate on a small group of set activities such as keeping personal lost tooth tally, creating a class graph of lost teeth and drawing a tooth fairy. In addition to this, the "Teachers" page lists other possible activities and posts free resources. Consider integrating how to use Google Earth reviewed here. Have students locate where other participants go to school. Compare and contrast how their environment looks similar or different from your own school. This is a perfect unit Dental Health Month (February). Be sure to get parent permission before posting any student work on this sharing site.

Crawford the Cat is a website that teaches young children about health issues like brushing your teeth and social skills like working together. There are numerous 5-minute videos teaching students about good table manners, trying new food, exercise, colds and flu, and several other health/science topics. The site includes videos, online books, printables and interactive games.

tag(s): dental health (23), hygiene (10), preK (281), social skills (20)

In the Classroom

This site works really well with an interactive whiteboard or projector. Students can view the videos on the board and then play the games on the interactive board. The printables can be used by an entire class or for individual students who need skills reinforcement, and the books can be used as a center. The students have the choice of having the books read to them or reading on their own, so the site addresses the abilities of all students.

These activities from the National Institutes of Health, Department of Health & Human Services offer both online and praintable version of coloring pages on science and health topics: from personal hygiene to environmental awareness. After a brief introduction to the visual spectrum of colors, users can select to color pages, guess colors in hidden pictures with "magic" crayons, or to print a coloring book. Topics include dental health, plants, fitness, weather, healthy eating, and more. As the page notes, you need a Java-enabled browser like Netscape or Microsoft Explorer to color "on-line." See the TeachersFirst Toolbox page to find out how to enable Java on your computer.

Use this site as an engaging way to reinforce science concepts introduced in class. Share the printables with children to take home. Show children how the spectrum appears naturally in biology. You can also use the pictures as jumping off points for discussion. Another option that encourages creativity is a drawing game using javascript.

This wonderful site has a collection of 17 original stories read by actors and actresses. A wonderful way to show children that reading is valued by folks in all walks of life! An example is "Dad, Are You the Tooth Fairy" read by Jason Alexander. Many of the story titles are parodies of famous tales. Users can see the actor holding the book and turning the pages as he hears and sees the story being read. Accompanying activities and an activity guide complete the offerings. The activities are terrific comprehension checkers and build solid reading strategies. The video is available in three screen sizes. Flash required.

In the Classroom

Make the stories a center or use a projector for the whole class to watch the video. Then share the link on your teacher web page for students to repeat it over and over at home. Make sure your spakers are turned up!

This activity about teeth could be easily adapted for any elementary age classroom. There are three sections to this website. The first, "Information Panels" provides students with information about teeth, decay, cavities and more! The second section, "Teeth Identification Diagram" challenges students to identify all of the teeth on the jaw line. The third section, "Tooth Structure Diagram" is another diagramming activity. This activity asks for the names of specific parts of the tooth, gum and jaw. There is a glossary available for all activities. This site requires FLASH.

In the Classroom

For younger students, be sure to try an interactive whiteboard. This is an excellent lesson for all ages - healthy teeth! This is a definite keeper for Dental Health Month.
