TeachersFirst's What is a DAT?
A "DAT" (device agnostic tool) is a FREE tool that is available as an app on iOS (iPhone, iPad), Android, and web devices. DATs are especially useful in the BYOD or 1:1 classroom/tablet programs because all students may not be using the same device or the same format of browsing (i.e. app vs. web version). DATS offer you the flexibility to take advantage of these amazing FREE tools on any and all devices. Students can access projects using the same app (or web device) no matter what kind of device they are using.
Remember, even the best DATs have slight differences in capabilities depending on the device. Challenge your students to find and share any additional or missing features that they may find on the various devices they are using within their cooperative learning groups. Our reviews also feature many tips. So be sure to read the “Edge Features” found at the end of each review. You can learn about using these DATs safely within your school policies, if there are free vs. premium features, how products can be shared, how to create individual accounts (if needed), and so much more. Take advantage of this FREE service.
This presentation and special topics area highlights some of our editors’ TOP choices for DATs to use to organize, communicate, assess, and differentiate for your students. See our complete list of DATs on our BYOD Dream Tools page. TeachersFirst encourages all of our members to add comments and ratings to help other teachers who are also using these tools. Apps tend to change quickly, so help a fellow teacher out with any tips that you find on using the DATs in the classroom and of course within your school policies. Remember TeachersFirst membership is 100% FREE!
