Graphing - Understanding Data

Here is an example of a bar graph:

II.

Inform the students what the objective is and what they are expected to accomplish. That is, the student will identify, construct and color a bar graph.

III.

The students will then be given packs of candy and a sheet of paper with the name of the graph at the top Favorite Candy Flavors. Remind the students not to eat the candy until they are instructed to. Instruct the students to:

a. group the candy according to colors.
b. put their grouped candy in vertical rows.
c. write numbers 1-9 along the left side of the paper.
d. place each row of candy on the paper to correspond with the number on the left of paper.
e. after all flavors of candy have been placed on the paper students use a pencil and a ruler to trace a rectangle around each row.
f. color the rectangles according to the color of the candy i.e. red candy color the rectangle red, blue candy color the rectangle blue.
g. (use graph paper if possible) See Example 2.
