Planning Writing - The Graphic Organizer

 

Content Standard: Students comprehend and compose a wide range of written, oral and visual texts in the process of making meaning in the English language arts.

Performance Standard: Uses the writing process to develop a variety of effectively written products (prewriting, drafting. Revising, editing and publishing) Rearranges words, sentences and paragraphs

Objective: Students will write a short paragraph using a graphic organizer.

Materials: paper, pencils, graphic organizer, chart paper.

Define a graphic organizer.

A graphic organizer is used to organize thoughts before writing. Engage the students in a discussion about graphic organizers. Provide an exemplar for students to see a graphic organizer.

Demonstrate on chart paper from a selected topic how a graphic organizer works.

Give the students a writing prompt such as:
On the first day of school I…, I hate it when…, I remember when…,

Pre Writing: Have students write down their ideas using the graphic organizer.

Drafting: Students will write their first draft and refer to the graphic organizer

Revising: Once the writing is drafted it may need revisions. Students will give more clarity to their writing and make as many revisions as necessary.
Guidelines for revising may include:
Are all of my sentences related to the topic?
Can everyone understand my sentences?

Editing: Students will make final drafts. Final drafts should be written closely to Standard English
Guidelines for editing will include:
Do my sentences begin with capital letters?
Do my sentences end with an end punctuation mark?
Have I used complete sentences?

Sharing: The student's work is then shared in some published form. A published form can include a book, a paper or an electronic file.
