With an emphasis on the visual arts, age appropriate readings, informational videos, writing, and discussion, this unit examines how stereotypes are used to represent people and characters. While the African-American experience is the focus of this unit, the content can be easily adapted to address other cultural and gender-related stereotypes.

Here's a well-illustrated, amply narrated explanation of how to introduce color theory into your art curriculum. This lesson uses easy-to-make foam core shapes to help students learn how colors combine and interact with one another. Lots of photographs show how the lesson can work in the classroom. This one's complete enough that teachers who aren't art specialists could use it.

This is a web game for kids which explores Van Gogh's paintings and style, complete with examples and commentary. The structure of the site encourages students to understand both what and why Van Gogh created his impressionist masterpieces. Great supplementary activity for an art class, or an independent exploration for the extra-curious.

Here is a collection of superb images of Italian sculpture. The catalogue is by artist, and there are special sections on the cities of Florence and Rome. This site is in Italian, but since it's image intensive it's not hard to navigate using the artists' names. Definitely worth a try for art and art history classes.

In the Classroom

Have students try out this site on individual computers, or as a learning center. The most effective way to use this site is to allow students to work on it in pairs so they can easily assist each other. This would be an interesting addition to any lesson plan on origami, or in a language arts class, during a unit on a book such as "The Paper Crane."

In the Classroom

Use the images on this site to create a visual discovery activity in your classroom, introducing the topic of prehistoric cave drawings. Select 3-5 images from this site, choosing the most powerful and moving images. Placing the images on individual slides, allow students 1-2 minutes to observe each image. During that time period, students should be taking notes based on what they observe, predict and infer about each image. The more powerful and detailed the image is, the more information students can take out. After the class has observed all the chosen images, have a class discussion based on the notes students took. This is a great way to introduce content in a way that gets students thinking, as well as avoiding the typical lecture format.
