Try the activities on your interactive whiteboard or projector as a classroom introduction to an animal-themed unit or research project. Use the trivia questions as a pretest to determine student knowledge. Choose animals used in the activities to research and compare/contrast. This is an extensive collection of ready to go, teacher-made SMART Notebook activities. This collection covers all grade levels and subject areas. Click Elementary, Middle School, Jr. High, or High School to find the many (MANY) resources). The topics vary greatly and the quantity is impressive. You must have Smart Board software installed on your computer to open these files. Some files will work using the SMART Notebook Express online viewer available here. (Download the notebook file from Longwood's collection to your desktop and then upload to SMART Notebook Express site.)

Make sure students are aware of copyright laws. Use this site to encourage proper use of photographs that students have the authorization to use. Model including appropriate photo credits on the posters. Check out the Big Huge Labs educator account. Easily pre-register students to avoid creating logins, view and download their creations, and view the site advertisement free. You will find information about the Educator Account here.Younger students can use this tool together as a whole-class activity or simply enjoy the posters their teacher creates. Have students create a picture about a unit topic with a caption using new terms learned. For example, create posters about predators and prey or classifications of animals. Students can create a poster of a study skill or learning activity that helps them learn. Create a caption that explains how the student learns the best. Every subject area can use this resource to create interesting presentation posters for display or as springboards to talk about what was learned. For example, in Biology, students could create a poster about a cell part with a clever caption about the importance of the job. In Literature or History, students can create posters about the perspectives of others in the story or at that time of history. Rather than a traditional research project, have cooperative learning groups use this site to show their knowledge in any subject area. Ask students to apply concepts such as constitutional rights by illustrating them in poster images with captions. Teachers can create bulletin board images, as well. Have a classroom motivation poster competition to start off the school year! Share the winners on your class wiki or in a PowerPoint presentation at back to school night/open house. As special occasions approach, have students bring in or take a digital picture they can make into a poster as a family gift with their own inspirational saying. Create a portfolio of 6 word stories, utilizing a powerful picture and 6 words to demonstrate the concept that was learned. Assign students the task of placing their project on a blog with a larger explanation of their understanding of the concept used in the picture.

Assign small groups different topics to view/explore and then create multimedia presentations to share with the class. Have students make online "tours" to explain the topic using Screencast-o-matic, reviewed here. This is a great find for gifted students (logic or unusual topics, for example or a site where students can do more in-depth investigation related to a "standard" curriculum topic)! This site is excellent for enrichment or for gifted students. Discuss the statistics given on the site: numbers infected with polio and the change in incidence with the advent of vaccines. Create online sticky type bulletin boards to view from any online device using lino. Click to try it first without even joining. The "Give it a shot!" button has a "How to" canvas has stickies explaining how to use lino. Join and create your own canvases to share stickies, reminders, files, and more. Change sticky colors from the menu in the upper right hand corner or use the easy editing tools that appear when the sticky is selected. Use the icons at the bottom of each sticky note to "peel them off," share, edit, and more. Create a group from your lino page to share and collaborate on canvases. You can also share canvases publicly so anyone with the URL can participate. This is a device-agnostic tool, available on the web but also available for free as both an Android and iOS app. Use it from any device or move between several devices and still access your work. App and web versions vary slightly.

In the Classroom
Use this tool easily in your Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) classroom since all students will be able to access it for free, no matter what device they have. Students can use this when researching alone or in groups, sharing files, videos, and pictures quickly from one computer to another. Have students write tasks for each member of the group on a sticky so that everyone has a responsibility. Show them how to copy/paste URLs for sources onto notes, too. Use lino as your virtual word wall for vocabulary development. Use a lino for students to submit and share questions or comments about assignments and tasks they are working on. Use it as a virtual graffiti wall for students to make connections between their world and curriculum content, such as "I wonder what the hall monitor would say finding Lady Macbeth washing her hands in the school restroom... and what Lady M would say back." (Of course, you will want to have a PG-13 policy for student comments!) Encourage students to maintain an idea collection lino for ideas and creative inspirations they may not have used yet but do not want to "lose." They can color code and organize ideas later or send the stickies to a new project board later. In writing or art classes, use lino as a virtual writer's journal or design a notebook to collect ideas, images, and even video clips. In science classes, encourage students to keep a lino board with (classroom appropriate) questions and "aside" thoughts about science concepts being studied and to use these ideas in later projects so their creative ideas are not 'lost" before project time. A lino board can also serve as a final online "display" for students to "show what they know" as the culmination of a research project. Add videos, images, and notes in a carefully arranged display not unlike an electronic bulletin board. This is also a great tool to help you stay "personally" organized. Use many of these resources for brain teasers, mind stretchers, or anticipatory sets to initiate class. Encourage students to brainstorm, explain, and even blog their reactions to these resources. Provide time for students to work out the science behind the demonstrations. Consider creating little podcasts using a site such as PodOmatic (reviewed here), with students demonstrating end explaining the science to show true understanding.

Snow School is a program run by educators across the country that enables students to attend actual classes with hands-on learning to find out about living creatures under the snow. The site contains links to programs run in 48 states and can be used to sign up individual classrooms to participate in their area. Even if your class doesn't participate, there are 2 important sections of the site that can be used in any classroom. Use the search bar to find For Teachers. This section contains links to lesson plans that allow students to explore the snow outdoors of their classroom, snow science experiments and activities, and links to other resources for teachers. Then use the search bar to find For Kids. Here kids can learn how snowshoes work, find activities to do in the snow, and links to other resources.
In the Classroom
PE teachers can use the activities area for suggestions on teaching students games and other things to do on a snowy day (use the search bar to find activities). The Snow Science sections contains many experiments to perform in Science class that can be related to weather units, chemistry units, and animal units. There are varying difficulties and intensities of the laboratory activities offered here. Lessons can always be adapted to make them easier for younger grade levels or amp them up for later grade levels.

Up the Creek is an informative, cartooned look at biodiversity. While the cartoon is made in and for New Zealand, the concepts and ideas are still good for teaching biodiversity anywhere. In fact, since this is in a slightly different setting than the United States, it is interesting to see that the environmental protection practices tend to be the same. There are some native, Maori words and unfamiliar terms for North American kids, however they can easily be understood through context clues or having students research them from the computer.

Try having students work through the cartoon tour of the New Zealand environment, having them keep a graphic organizer comparing the biodiversity and environmental practices to those that are practiced in their community or state. After choosing a topic, various additional choices are offered. For example, under Force and Motion options are available to choose inertia, action and reaction, simple machines, acceleration, and gravity and inertia. Key vocabulary is presented along with a short video explanation of the topic. Don't miss the videos about each topic. In addition to the video, there is an option to test your own ability. Each topic can also be printed to use in the classroom and there is a link to related "jams."

This website provides an interesting classroom activity about surface tension and detergents. This is a great introductory site to inquiry types of activity. It is cheap and inexpensive to run, easy to clean, and has a fantastic "wow" factor for students. In the activity, food coloring is added to a small bowl of milk and liquid soap is added creating a color swirl in the milk. Students think it is magic, and what better way to launch a science class? It is excellent for teaching the scientific method, and if expanded upon can lead to concepts of variables.

Try using this during the first few days of school to get and keep students excited about learning science. Have students create "I observed" and "what happened" lists. Discuss the different ways of making observations. Monitor the class by only moving forward as a class one step at a time. This cuts down on ruining the surprise for slower groups. Plus it provides time for questioning. Follow up by having students discuss the why the materials reacted the way that they did. Finding it difficult to "show" your health or biology students how different parts of their cells, bodies, or even toothpaste work? Try this part of the Vimeo site. It has animations of different cellular and molecular processes. The animations are not only factual but they are beautiful as well. Videos are shareable and can be embedded onto websites. The clips are spectacular for entry level biology students to visualize molecular and cellular processes, but the detail and intricacy of the clips makes them extremely suitable for advanced placement biology students.

In the Classroom
Try using "The Crest Dual Action Whitening Mechanism Action" in upper middle to high school level health classes. Show the video on the interactive whiteboard or projector and then talk about different toothpastes and good hygiene practices. Discuss the "why" of keeping teeth healthy. Cross curriculum and have students develop experiments to test different toothpastes. (Have students use unsealed tile pieces instead of their teeth, just in case of allergies, toothbrush availability, etc.) In biology class, show the video of the T4 Bacteriophage on the interactive whiteboard to start a discussion of bacterial viruses or viruses in general. Have students revisit the video at the conclusion of the lesson, and have them make podcasts of the bacteriophage invasion process using PodOmatic (reviewed here). Try taking screen shots using a website like Jing (reviewed here) to capture different parts of the video to create an enhanced podcast. Just remember: give credit to where it is due. Another thought on how to use videos like this is to embed one on your website, especially during weeks where classes are interrupted by school events or testing, and have students participate in an online discussion of the video. This site, created in the United Kingdom, offers many timelines with a simple click to launch an amazing 3-dimensional page. Timelines are organized by subject matter and include samplings from literature, sociology, history, everyday life, science, technology, explorers, medicine, and more. With another click, you can zoom from one century to another. Start in the 1210s and work your way through the years. View the context of history using visual artifacts from DaVinci's contemporaries to shopping in the 1890s. Connect historical events or technological accomplishments by seeing them alongside simultaneous events, precursors, or results. An additional option allows you to save favorite timelines and/or events. Although the main timeline requires flash which is no longer supported, the century timelines remain viewable and provide valuable information.

This site is excellent for research projects or to provide visual context to your curriculum in social studies, world cultures, world history, literature, art, or western heritage classes. Offer this set of timelines as a research source for history, social studies, and literature classes. Show students these timelines on an interactive whiteboard. Or have students research various topics on their own using this fabulous tool. Pique their interest by letting them browse to find out what else happened at the same time as events in the standard history curriculum -- then ask WHY. Ignore the advertising as this site is worth it.

These images will support classroom instruction, presentations, multimedia projects, websites, or reports. Useful tags will help you search for images.
