Use this well designed 3D simulation to show the position of the sun and moon from any point on Earth. See the positions instantly in real time or choose a past or future time. Hover over the Moon to view the current moon phase. Sunrise and sunset times are also given. Choose different locations on Earth (it gives you the latitude and longitude) to see the differences. There is a lot of information hidden in the interactive, so explore carefully.

In the Classroom
The change in seasons is a difficult concept for students to understand. Use this interactive tool to show the sun's position at various times of the year and how the sunrise and sunset times change. This is terrific to share on an interactive whiteboard or projector, then have elementary (or even middle school) students "act out" the roles of sun. moon, and earth by moving about the room. Turn down the music to avoid distraction. Show how sunrise and sunset are also different at various points on the globe. Allow students the opportunity to play with the tool first and ask them what they notice and what questions they have. Inquire together to understand the various concepts. Share on an interactive whiteboard or projector with a student emcee to run the inquiry. This World Population Clock offers a world population counter. It is not perfect but it is an effective tool to show just how dramatic and quickly the population is growing. "Freeze" the site and resume the counter later to show just how big changes can take place in small amounts of time. The calculator can also estimate the population at a chosen date.

Try using this website in science class during environmental science units on human population growth. Start the class by sharing this website on your interactive whiteboard (or projector) for students to see. Explain the concept of a population counter, and pause the clock. Have students copy down the number in their notes. Continue with class discussion and activities. With five or so minutes left in the class, bring the students back to the website and quickly unfreeze and re-freeze. Have students compute the change in population during their class. IndyKids is an online newspaper for kids. This online version is the same as the printable version that produces 10,000 copies of each issue, reaching kids in 36 states of the US. Articles are written by both kids and adults, featuring topics related to current events and topics of interest to kids. Articles written by kids are noted as such and include the writer's age. At the time of this review, some of the "kid written articles" included Growing Poverty: Hard to Ignore At Home, Wasps: Do I Know You, and several others. Be sure to check out the category search on the lower right-hand portion of the site with topics such as: Kids Around the World, Culture and Activism, Education, and much more. Newspapers are archived in PDF format for easy printing and dated back several years.

Adventures in the Subatomic Universe has a wide range of engaging multimedia and hands-on materials to introduce the exciting world of particle physics to students ages 7 and up (and their families). This highly interactive site offers videos, games, and a club with downloads based on three themes. Themes include "How Small is Small", "Quarks: Ups, Downs, and the Universe", and "How Do You Find Out About Something You Can't See?" Topics vary from electricity to matter to shapes and much more. Lesson plans, organized by theme, can be done in any order. Some of the featured "games" include Matter Mechanics, Photon Invaders, and Height Chart. Videos even explain connections between subatomic particles and healthy eating! Many other interactives are also available. Though the games require Flash, there is so much more to learn from the videos and other features that this site is worth a visit.

FIT by WebMD is a great website to promote health and healthy opportunities for students of all ages. Explore five different areas of health: Food, Move, Recharge, Healthy Weight, and Mood. The site offers a far healthier approach to fitness than simply weight. Highlights include an age appropriate body mass index calculator, video clips, recipes, age-appropriate articles, and more. There is an entire Parents area so everyone can be involved together.
A free registration gives the member free tools like a Food and Fitness Planner, Vaccine Tracker, Symptom Checker, and many more. The registration information required is minimal and is legally appropriate for the age level.

Check school policy on setting up student accounts or work together with parents on this. Read the the articles together. Have students track and monitor their Food and Fitness over that time with the . planner provided. Tracking their own progress will be educational and fun! Keep a class "Workout Wiki" that can serve as a meeting place and neutral location to store exercise goals and nutritional changes. The Body Browser (brought to you by Google) is an amazing resource for teaching anatomy and body systems to middle and high school students. The site only requires an up-to-date browser. It allows you to view a human (male or female) body as either a whole or a system (or even body part/organ) at a time. The navigation is EASY! On the left side of the screen there is a toolbar that you simply click to reveal or unveil a particular body system. There are also labels for all parts of the body. The label function can be turned on and off. This is a truly remarkable tool. No accounts or sign up required. Check out specific organ systems or use the search tab in the upper right corner of the site to find specific muscles, nerves, bones, and more!

Try incorporating this site into your homework and practice activities. Instead of the traditional laboratory manual, share this site with your students so that they can practice naming and identifying different parts of the body. Note that the diagrams are anatomically correct, so immature students will giggle. Share this site on the "big screen" using your projector or interactive whiteboard. This site could be a great money saver as an alternative lab manual for anatomy. Reuse your past year's questions and teach the students how to navigate the site to find their answers. Students will be as fascinated with the modeling site as you are. Considering sharing this resource on your class website. Choose a story that relates to your topic that you are teaching such as science or even music with a story such as "How Music is Good for Your Brain." Share the story with your students. Discuss the writings, and then use it as a platform on how students should approach the things that they are learning in class. This way they develop critical thinking skills and extract the most important information and leave the accessory facts to the side. Assign specific articles to cooperative learning groups to read and explore together. Nobelprize.org is the official website of the Nobel Prize. Here you find information about Alfred Nobel, the prizewinners, interviews, and photos. Videos of interviews of Nobel peace prizewinners, speeches, ceremonies, interviews, banquets, lectures, announcements, award ceremonies, and documentaries fill the gamut of all of the prizewinners. The Nobel prizes awards are in literature, chemistry, medicine, peace, economics, and physics. Under the Education tab at the top find arieties of educational games/activities and lesson plans help explain many of the Nobel Award winners' work. This site clearly explains and illustrates the purpose of the awards, the award winners, and their ideas. Videos give an insider look at each of the winners.

Geniventure engages students in learning about genetics and heredity through game-play. Players advance through a series of digital investigations to save dragons from extinction. Use the Quick-Start Guide to register for an educator account and create a class. Geniventure offers many teacher resources, including a guide to the challenges, lists of hints by challenge, and teaching strategies for level 3. Another feature for educators is the Teacher Dashboard Guide, which assists in understanding the tools available for managing assignments and understanding students' progress within the game. Students participate by creating accounts using your class word or accessing accounts you make in advance.
In the Classroom
It is recommended that educators try this game before assigning this activity to students to understand how students participate and move throughout levels. Search YouTube to find video tutorials if necessary. Use the simulations as a flipped learning activity to generate questions about genetics and heredity. Consider using a resource such as Sway, reviewed here to assign your flipped learning lesson. Share the videos and activities on your projector or interactive whiteboard. Try using this website as a resource in art class to have students find a picture and recreate it though their own interpretation. Have students in a language arts class choose a photograph and create a story about how it came to be as a creative writing exercise. This PBS site is a reorganized collection of over 16,000+ public media offerings (including radio and photographs), arranged specifically for preK-12 teachers. You can search by subject (the landing page subject is physical education) and grade level across many subjects. After viewing three offerings, you must join (for free) to continue. Membership includes the option of saving favorites. Use the search box at the top to find correlations to state standards. The site is still in development, so material is being added frequently.

This free organizational tool can be used in classrooms at every level. Teachers can use this tool to help organize learning units and share the orgnanization on screen so students see how pieces fit together. Share the unit map with other teachers, students, or parents, to highlight goals, objectives, learning tasks, assessments, and resources. Share before your unit and expectations become very clear. Use as a yearly overview for parents showing units with resources at the beginning of the year at Open House. Let parents see the multiple ways their child will be assessed through the year. Students can use this tool for direction in problem based learning situations. Use this tool in science for collecting data, experiments, or science fair outlines. Use the tool in writing class to make writing guides for narrative or expository writing. In reading, use for predictions, sequencing of stories, inferences, or organizing genres of books each student has read. Have students map multiple ways to solve a single problem in math class. Have students keep daily requirements or schedules with readily available resources as links. Let students enjoy taking notes from content based classes. Have a student scribe create the notes each day and share with the class. The JASON Project home page is a portal to a huge number of scientifically significant activities, video clips, curricula packages, lesson plans, and more! While you could create an account to use one of the current curriculum pieces individually, it is a far more valuable resource if you register and join the website for FREE! Once registered, you can easily access all of the interactive content and archived activities. In fact, to fully access all archived curriculum you MUST register for a free account. Once inside the "member only" Jason site, simply click on the Curricula tab on the left side to see all current and past missions still available on the site. This could turn into your next "go-to" resource for online interactive science in the classroom. This is a MUST-SEE site with a ton of high interest topics for students. It is definitely worth the 1-2 minute FREE registration. Looking for some examples of topics? There are lessons/activities about Mysteries of Earth & Mars, Humpback whales, Monster Storms, Rainforests, Journey to the Center of the Earth, The Great Lakes, Measurement, Forces, Velocity, and many, many more. It appears that they update this site frequently, so check back often.

In the Classroom
With the array of information, lesson plans, and modules for learning this website can be used in so many different ways! If you are searching for a video clip that is relevant to your current topic, perform a search of their digital library. Looking for an entire lesson plan or a single assignment? Click on the Teacher Tools bar to quickly find something suitable. Share the video clip on your interactive whiteboard. If several topics relate to your current subject matter, challenge cooperative learning groups to investigate different portions of this site. (This would only work with older/more independent students.) Then have student create projects to share with the class and "teach" about their topic.
