This extremely well-organized site from U.C. Berkeley introduces students to the history of life and how it results in today's biodiversity. The site includes two different levels for grades K-4 and 5-12, making this an introduction that can be used in virtually any classroom setting. There is a Teacher Guide with lesson plans, handouts, assessments, related activities and much more. Created with support from the National Science Foundation.

In the Classroom

Introduce this activity with a projector or on an interactive whiteboard to show students how to navigate the site. Then, in your flipped or blended classroom (or at a computer center), have students explore on their own. Ask students to create blogs sharing their learning and understanding using Telegra.ph, reviewed here. With Telegra.ph you just click on an icon to upload images from your computer, add a YouTube or Vimeo, or Twitter links. This blog creator requires no registration. Enhance student learning and allow pairs or small groups of students to explore Related Activities and share what they learned with their peers using an interactive poster like Marq (formerly Lucidpress), reviewed here. Students can keep their work for future reference in a digital portfolio such as Pathbrite, reviewed here.

This large metasite offers a well-organized collection of scores of links relating to the study and categorization of insects. Like most sites of this nature, there are no explanations of the links, so you may have to hunt to find what you're after. We've included this one because of the number of resources the authors have found.

Here's a collection of science lesson plans covering disciplines from geology to earth science, chemistry, and general science. Each includes complete procedures, standards references, and discussion. Some of these lessons use video clips as an integral component, so teachers will want to plan accordingly.

tag(s): dna (44), evolution (85), genetics (76)

In the Classroom

The lesson plans here are excellent! Choose from many lessons (levels 4-12) to use in class to save you time. All lessons have a summary explaining what you and students will encounter with that lesson. Some example titles are The Ladder of Life where through video and Web-based activities, the students will develop a greater understanding of what DNA does in a cell. Students will be able to assemble DNA parts in order to simulate DNA strands. They will also have the opportunity to experimentally view DNA through an extraction technique included in the lesson. Another is Evolution: Its Effect Throughout Geological Time and the Controversy where students review the basics of Charles Darwin's Theory of Evolution. They use the World Wide Web to explore the various stages of evolution, over geological time, and learn how each organism fits into the evolutionary story. These are just two representatives of how the many lessons are presented.
