The site includes a search bar to use when looking for specific topics such as fractions or algebra. Be sure to check out the links to puzzles to find many different logic puzzles for classroom use. In the Classroom
Share puzzles from the sites for students to complete weekly or as homework, then challenge students to create a talking avatar using a photo or other image (legally permitted to be reproduced). Find links to websites offering practice with TCAP, ACT, SAT, and GED tests. There also links to general subject matter assessments for all grade levels. Although TeachersFirst does not typically review "hotlists," this collection is a well-organized way to find a quick-access review. Each topic includes links to several sites for practicing skills for that test, including several other links sorted by subject for review of content material. For example, under the Social Studies heading you will find grade level links as well as geography and state quizzes. Be aware: at the time of this review, about 95% of the links were working.

Students can focus on areas of strength or weakness on a math game day or practice test taking by answering previously released test questions. This education friendly tool avoids some of the "public interaction" that can offer inappropriate content. Upgrade to more advanced features, to include more options. The additional information on blogging makes this site very valuable even if you already have a blogging platform. Find a plethora of advice, tutorials, pdfs, and lesson plans for blogging. This site is a great reference site for all who are beginning to use blogs, or even look for more varied and effective ways to log with students, or even other classes. Compare this tool to other free blogging tools mentioned in TeachersFirst's Blog Basics for the Classroom .

The CK-12 Flexbook Library holds ninety-two free, downloadable, and customizable textbooks. Topics are primarily mathematics and science: operations, physics, probability, biodiversity, organic chemistry, calculus, and many others. Other subjects include SAT preparation books, spelling, composition, and more. Navigate to the type of book you are looking for by scrolling over the edition. Read the brief description, and even view the table of contents. There are PDF printables, video clips, and much more! Many of the texts have both student and teacher editions. It may not be feasible to purchase new textbooks, but current ones are still needed. This free resource allows you to use fresh materials without spending a ton on new texts. Even better, if you do not like a book after using it in class, you can select a new one or combine pieces into your own "new" book.

Wolfram Tones is a different and dynamic approach to thinking about music. Instantly create music and download it to your computer. Choose tone style, select a variation, and adjust the tone by using the generator, instrumentation, pitch mapping, or time controls. Save your "tone" to your collection or email it to friends. Your collection is associated to the computer where you make it using web browser cookies so no registration is necessary. Tones are packaged as midi files. Mathematical rules create these complex forms of music on Wolfram Tones. The program takes the mathematical pattern and turns it onto its side to produce a musical score. Here, the height of the pattern is the pitch of the note. More than just a musical resource, this website allows you to see and hear math. This site requires Real Player.

In math class, have students choose and analyze a musical pattern as part of a unit on algorithms. Have them change the parameters using the program controls to produce a sound that they like. Then have them relate the changes they hear to the changes in the math. In music class, have students create their own portfolio of music using Wolfram Tones. LearnZillion is a video platform that combines video lessons, assessments, and progress reporting. Lessons highlight Common Core Standards in Math for grades 3 - 9. Each lesson is given in a video format, generally about 5 minutes per lesson. The lesson ends with a practice video. You are also presented with practice problems, and the answers are demonstrated and discussed. Teachers can sign up for a free account offering many special features of the site. Create customized playlists for students by dragging and dropping videos onto your playlist. Many lessons have a behind the scenes commentary just for teachers to watch before teaching a lesson to explain the rationale behind what is included. Featured materials can be downloaded for use in class. Short quizzes at the end of each lesson are scored and updated in student profiles, providing you with quick assessment information. Create individualized playlists for students to customize and differentiate instruction. Find lessons by using the Explore link on the site, choosing a general topic, then a more specific category. Each lesson includes the Common Core Standard addressed above the video lesson.

Imagine a site that allows you to discover and share websites, find and create custom quizzes, create a class website, track student comprehension, and save, share, and reuse content. You will find all of these features and more at this site for teachers preK- grade 8 (still in beta). At the time of this review, the entire site was free - so no need to worry about what is included in a basic vs premium membership. After creating a free account, go to your dashboard to add new content on your 19Pencils site through searches and favorites. There is a special section called My Class Page that students will see when going to your site. This includes items you have chosen as favorites and class quizzes. To share this content on your current website or blog, there is a widget code to copy and paste. 19Pencils also has a blog, Facebook page, and Twitter feeds to follow. The site has some short videos to help you become comfortable with its many features.

Make the content pubic, private to your students or private to all within the school. Create a lesson by using the online whiteboard and your microphone. Easily upload images from your computer and switch between whiteboard screens. Click on the Students tab to provide a link for students to be able to find your course. Students can self-register using the unique classroom code. Each lesson has a unique url you can share, as well. Students can also be removed from registration lists in this section.

Use this resource to create homework help for students to peruse when they are stuck on their own trying to complete assignments. Create mini lessons for students to review or learn the material they may have missed. Consider allowing students to use your account to write a script and record mini lessons for use by other students. This site provides resources for educators interested in improving students mathematics learning and development. The site includes video examples of innovative teaching methods and tools for immediate use in classrooms. Each grade level offers links to Core Ideas and most offer MARS Tasks, Rubrics, and Analysis. The MARS Task is where lesson ideas are found. These lessons are available in portions (task, rubric, questions, etc.), or as a large downloadable file containing all portions of the lesson. Many other resources are available such as a school-wide problem of the month, professional development resources, and administrative leadership resources. Be sure to take the video tour of the site as an overview of all that is available.

Nobelprize.org is the official website of the Nobel Prize. Here you find information about Alfred Nobel, the prizewinners, interviews, and photos. Videos of interviews of Nobel peace prizewinners, speeches, ceremonies, interviews, banquets, lectures, announcements, award ceremonies, and documentaries fill the gamut of all of the prizewinners. The Nobel prizes awards are in literature, chemistry, medicine, peace, economics, and physics. Varieties of educational games/activities help explain many of the Nobel Award winners' work. This site clearly explains and illustrates the purpose of the awards, the award winners, and their ideas. Videos give an insider look at each of the winners.
