AP Biology teachers will love these downloadable, advanced mathematical models (Excel and other) for many biology concepts in ecology, botany, genetics, biochemistry, and more. Created for college classrooms, the models are quite sophisticated and may be best used by advanced students or as a whole-class activity. These models provide real-world application of mathemetical and scientific concepts that are certain to excite budding scientists. The desciptions include computer software specifications for successful use. Some examples of applications include: a model for biogeography and the impact of mainland species pool, area of the island, and distance of the island from the mainland on the species available on the island; a 3D mathematical model of various factors' impact on the growth of tree branches; and a worksheet that simulates the population growth of two interacting species

In the Classroom

Teachers eager to spread enthusiasm for true scientific inquiry and use of mathematical tools in the sciences may want to select one of these tools to extend their regular curriculum. Share it on a projector so students are not overwhelmed with the college-level material at first.

If you are ready for some hands-on technology in your math class, try this collection of lesson ideas for using TI calculators(or TI SMARTview on an interactive whiteboard). Requires graphing calculator(s). The site is plain-vanilla, but the content is good. Most activities include both student sheets and also Teacher Notes and Explanations. Includes most high school math subjects and many middle school, as well. Even includes problem-solving strategies. The activities are separated by calculator model, so you can be certain you have an activity that works on your calculators. This collection was created by a high school/college teacher in Ohio, not Texas Instruments.

This math site is filled with interactive demonstrations that address a huge array of math concepts - from the most basic early elementary skills to algebra, trigonometry, and calculus. Select a topic or age group and then browse through the offerings. "Math for Everyone," an especially useful link for older students, offers authentic math problems related to figuring out tips, simple and compound interest, and the cost of electricity. Beware of the "Ask an Expert" feature - a fee is involved in receiving a solution, but past questions and answers can be viewed free of charge.

Many of these "applets" (mini programs) would work well on interactive whiteboard or student computers to see what happens as you make changes in a mathematical function, for example. Presented "without comment" it would take students a bit of time to figure out the utility of these applets on their own.

Despite its awkward subtitles, this site offers concise, amply illustrated presentations on algebra, trigonometry, and other branches of mathematics. Teachers may find this site useful when they need a perspective that's different from their usual text. Students can use the information in the same manner, as another explanation when they're stumped by the textbook, although there's no real search feature. Well worth a look.

Developed by a faculty member at Georgia Southern University with support from the National Science Foundation, this site offers a collection of demonstrations for precalculus, calculus, and post-calculus students using a variety of tools and media. None of these appears to require specialized equipment, and their utility will depend on their "fit" with individual curricula. Secondary math teachers may well find useful tools here.
