3D Toad offers many images for viewing items in both 3D and 360 degree rotation. The site offers an assortment of categories such as Dissections, Human and Animal Skeletons, Fossils, and an extensive listing of Chemicals. There are also categories not typically associated with a "toad" such as: Yoga, Music, Dental Hygiene, History, Ballet Positions, Computer Networking, Emergency Preparedness, and more! The History link is interesting and includes American 1700-1800 and American Civil War: both packed with artifacts. Choose any image then drag your mouse to view or zoom in and out as desired.

tag(s): 1700s (36), body systems (40), chemicals (39), civil war (133), coral (10), dance (26), dissection (7), elements (32), fossils (39), rocks (36)

In the Classroom

Use 3D Toad as a visual glossary on classroom computers. Have students visit this "visual glossary" center to explore objects and new vocabulary that they are learning. View and examine objects together on your interactive whiteboard or projector. Choose an area/topic that relates to what you are learning about in class. Have each student choose an object from that area to observe and explore to heighten observation skills. Challenge students to create an annotated image including text boxes and related links using a tool such as Thinglink, reviewed here.

This tool is a map-based interactive platform containing layers of news and information on climate change in the US. It includes the latest data, stories on the causes and impacts, and the response to climate change. View the most recent data, including temperature, precipitation, and carbon dioxide emissions. Filter stories by a variety of categories (such as Oceans.) Each dot displays a story.

tag(s): climate (80), climate change (87)

In the Classroom

Use the data and geotagged stories to understand more about climate change. Create multimedia (podcast, video, blog, wiki, etc.) or conventional products (poster or bulletin board) to explain the basics of climate change. Click on different dots on the map to view specific stories that are being published there. Compare the tone and substance of the different articles found in each of the areas. Are there certain regions that are more skeptical (or less) about this issue? Have students select a story to research in terms of its local implications at that location, such as a story about fracking in the Marcellus Shale region. Civics/government classes can use this site to trace political issues, news, and related policy initiatives related to climate change.

In the Classroom

Use Sound Bible to find short sound clips for use in presentations, videos, or interactive whiteboard lessons. In primary grades, play sounds as cues for classroom management, such as bird sounds to gather "at the nest" for circle time. Use sound clips as story or journal starter ideas. Play a clip and have students create a story that incorporates that sound. Take your students on an audio tour of the rainforest as you learn about the various animals and sounds. Use this site during units about weather to share sounds from storms, wind, thunder, and more. Explore ocean sounds, animals sounds, etc. Use in world language classes to spark conversations and build vocabulary. Play background sounds during creative writing class. Challenge students to write about how the sounds make them feel. Challenge gifted or digitally-clever students to use these sounds to create an all-audio story to accompany a drawing or image. Use a tool such as Scratch, reviewed here.

Use this tool to find current weather for any location. The site senses your current location, or you can enter one. Find out your seven day forecast. But there is more: go back in time to explore weather for any location on any previous date. Explore what the temperature was the day you were born, the first day of school this year, or any other time. Dates go back as far as 1945. View current temperatures and forecast by adding a location to the search bar or choose the time machine to go back in time to view weather at that location for any date. View the hourly temperature along with wind speed, humidity, and visibility. Choose either Fahrenheit or Celsius displays.

Use Forecast as an interesting addition to any history lesson. Choose the location and date that you are studying to find what the actual weather was at that time. Dates go back as far as 1945. Have students debate the impact of weather on historical events. What was the temperature in Dallas on the day JFK was assassinated? The possibilities are endless! Have students compare temperatures from different years during your weather unit, then create an online graph using ChartGizmo, reviewed here. Have students research climate change questions using actual data from this site.

Research what other objects can strike Earth and compare composition and origin in the Universe. Consider expanding your discussion to include folklore, religion, and other aspects of daily life that may have been "impacted" by meteorite impacts or sightings. Snapshot Serengeti helps researchers count and locate animals living in Serengeti National Park in Tanzania. More than 200 remote camera traps placed in the park capture images. The movements of animals trigger capture of images. View a short tutorial to learn to categorize and identify animals. Identify the type of skin, the pattern of the fur or skin of an animal, and the style of horns (if any) that an animal has. Based on those classifications, Snapshot Serengeti will suggest a few animals that match what you're seeing.

tag(s): animal homes (56), animals (278), classification (21), habitats (87)

In the Classroom

Introduce the site and watch the tutorial together on your interactive whiteboard or projector. Have students try to identify animals on Snapshot Serengeti as a great way to learn about the various animals that they see and the adaptations of animals to their African habitat. One thing to note about Snapshot Serengeti (before you turn your students loose on it) is that students may end up going through a lot of blank pictures that don't have any animals on them before they get to ones that do show animals. This is because remote cameras can sometimes be triggered by strong gusts of wind blowing something in front of them. Have your students create an online "scrapbook" on Serengeti animals using Scrapblog (reviewed here).

Use this resource to help your students learn more about local fish and the effects of human behavior on aquatic life. Have students use a fish to tell its own story with the additional assistance of a tool like Blabberize, reviewed here, where you can make your fish "talk!" Use in environmental science courses to help students understand sustainability and conservation. Try using it as part of practice for Envirothon competitions. Perhaps even start a wildlife club and use this site to prepare for a field trip of fishing.

In the Classroom

Use the lesson plans on the site to learn about resources and recycling. Be sure to discuss what is meant by "Reduce, reuse, recycle" in terms of resources and energy (Infographics and resources are helpful for this) and why recycling is not always the best answer. Do simpler activities or lessons with younger students during Earth Day or Earth Week. Include this link with other resources about resources and recycling. Have different groups each become an expert in the processing of one of the resources and discuss the common steps and problems involved in the recycling process.

Join Ruff Ruffman in the PBS Kids Game show, Fetch. Learn about animal science as you view (and participate) on this educational game show including 5 contestants ages 10-14. "Ruff" hosts the game show, reality style with children contestants, learning about science and also crazy challenges. Topics include (but are not limited to) animals, engineering, deserted islands, dinosaur footprints, hover crafts, mummies, song birds, and more. There are past episodes and games available.

tag(s): animal homes (56), birds (42), dinosaurs (38), diseases (66), literacy (106), machines (14), simple machines (17), vocabulary (235)

In the Classroom

Invite Ruff Ruffman into your classroom to add spice to your science, language arts, and math curriculum. Although contestants are ages 10-14, younger students would benefit by watching the activities. Some may be too challenging for younger students to complete on their own. Students will identify with the contestants as they learn and laugh along with Ruff. Add a Ruff adventure or interview as an anticipatory guide for a unit. Share a clip or experiment on your interactive whiteboard or projector. Use as a way to enrich during your unit on mammals, motion, or problem solving. Have older elementary students (or middle school) become familiar with the show's format, and create an "episode" based on your unit of study. Challenge cooperative learning groups to create videos to share using a site such as TeacherTube reviewed here. Create a writing experience from episodes given. Use an episode as a spark to begin a further area of inquiry. Add to your computers as a center time activity, or even as a special earned award. Share on your website as an enrichment source, or a great place for educational learning.
