Follow a team of scientists visiting Antarctica from December, 2001 to January, 2002. If you miss the live events, there are lots of reports filed on activities conducted during the visit. This site also has background sections on the Antarctic climate, the history of exploration, and the scientific tools and tasks involved in Antarctic science. From the Exploratorium.

In the Classroom

Use this videos on this site as a learning center or station during a unit on the water cycle or Continental Drift during an Earth Sciences or Physical Geography class. This activity would work best with a graphic organizer - we recommend Graphic Organizer Maker, (reviewed here).

The link concerning continental drift, entitled Gondwanaland, would also be a great activator to that unit. Share the site on the interactive whiteboard or projector to help students visualize how the spreading of the continents took place over the eons.

Well, as its title states, this site offers the basics on cartography. It's a very good summary that explains the origins of mapmaking, the terms (w/definitions), and also has a crossword puzzle. The info could easily be streamlined so the younger kids would understand the material. It also has a listing of suggested reading. Easy site to navigate and is extremely straightforward. Great site for anyone teaching maps.

This would be an excellent introductory activity for students learning basic map-building skills. Have students look at the site in cooperative learning groups or pairs, with the intentions of noting the valuable information listed on this site. These maps are excellent for a History or Geography teacher attempting to refresh students on the political geography of an area. Before teaching a unit on the Middle East or Asia, refresh and quiz students with these worksheets to help with both map skills and understanding of the area. Often a weak point in student knowledge, it can never hurt to help students become more aware of political geography.
