Eastman Kodak's office tower is the site for this web cam focused on a nest of peregrine falcons. Viewers can check the state of the nest from four different angles, and the site offers a chronology of this year's nesting. The quality of the enlarged images is surprisingly good. This one is worth several visits.

Share this site on an interactive whiteboard or projector as an introduction to a unit on bats. This site is excellent for explaining bats' ecological impacts in an attempt to show the positive side of having them in one's environment. Divide students into cooperative learning groups to explore the site, and then discuss what each group thought was the most important way that bats help their environments. A great way to do this is to have students create an online graphic to share using Tabblo reviewed here. Have each group share their graphic on the interactive whiteboard as a way to review the information with the class.

Here's a site which offers answers to imponderables such as, "Why is the ocean blue?" The site offers numerous articles of interest. You can join (for a fee), but the articles are available for free. The site is published by the British periodical New Science.
This site includes advertising.

tag(s): DAT device agnostic tool (179)

In the Classroom

Share the site on an interactive whiteboard or projector, and use it as a springboard for an ethics discussion during science class. Though there are a wide array of articles, some capture and illustrate arguments over the debate of stem cell research, Pluto's classification, and climate change. At the end of a unit, open one of these articles and use the real-world information provided to spark a classroom debate. Students can use the knowledge they have gained, in addition to seeing its practical application. This is a very useful site for science enrichment!
