The content includes several different areas of watershed ecology, management, and preservations. Many of the topics could serve as background information for lesson development on these topics. In addition, advanced high school students may find some topics useful in their science studies.

The Mystery Spot provides interactive modules great for building reading comprehension and science reasoning. It has seven modules that challenge you to read and research different diseases, and problem solve your way to a correct diagnosis of the issue. Modules include convenient links to further information about the diseases, symptoms, and medical tools used so you gain a thorough understanding of the content. Best of all, they are fun and engaging!

In the Classroom

Use the interactive modules early in the school year to develop critical thinking skills. Or, use as an end of the year activity to review different diseases and problem solving strategies that students have learned. Instruct students to read the activity and take notes. Encourage them to explore the extra links. Students can create charts to organize the information they have gathered. Students should submit their work and conclusions and discuss different possibilities.

Learn about the life and careers of many famous scientists by viewing intriguing videos. Find out about scientists such as Richard Feynman, Rosalind Franklin, and Gregor Mendel through interviews with scientists in their field today. Don't let the cartoon figures fool you: these videos are not "juvenile." The scientists included may not be household names to everyone, but the videos make their work accessible and interesting. At the time of this review, there were over a dozen scientists included, and more were being added regularly. Note that the actual videos are hosted on YouTube so may not be accessible in some schools. You could always view the videos at home and bring them to class "on a stick" to share. Use a tool such as KeepVid reviewed here to download the videos from YouTube.

tag(s): biographies (87), darwin (11), scientists (69)

In the Classroom

Use as a resource for finding more information about a variety of different scientists told from a scientist's perspective. Share the videos on your interactive whiteboard or projector. Consider having students create their own report about the importance of research and not just the biographical information about a scientist. Encourage students to make their own videos (or other presentation tool) about scientists to place on a wiki, site, or blog. Have students use one of the many TeachersFirst Edge multimedia tools reviewed here.
 This resource requires Adobe Flash.
