Click on the "Migration Patterns" link for an elegant look at the migration patterns of more than a dozen species from around the world. While designed to promote a film, this site is also a great teaching tool for the study of bird migration. Users with high-speed connections can hear audio and watch video clips of each bird. Truly neat!

You'll find more than just the bear facts (sorry...) at this site. There are sections about brown, black, polar, and grizzly bears, offering decent writeups on each, along with some very nice photographs. A kids' section offers several well-captioned slide shows about bears and their habits. This is a good example of a site that has effective text and visuals without lots of overboard effects. If bears are in your habitat, this one's a great resource.

BBC's companion web site to the program of the same name offers quizzes (e.g. name this sound...), live web cams, and lots of supplementary information on how mammals live. While teachers won't be able to build a complete curriculum here, the variety of activities could be a neat supplement to elementary or middle school studies of animals and habitats. You'll want a fast connection to make some of these features work well.

A lot of these lessons include vocabulary that students may not get a hold of right away. Have students create picture dictionaries to help remember the words, either in print form or using an online book maker such as Bookemon, reviewed here.

Pair students in pairs and have them complete the webquest during a unit on archaeology and the fossil record left behind by dinosaurs. As a culminating activity after the webquest, have students create a concept map showing how fossils are formed. Use a tool such as bubbl.us (reviewed here) to create and share the concept maps.

This earth science site virtually engages students in scientific research. Middle school students join "science mentors" to gather data and interpret direct and indirect evidence to propose multiple hypotheses of what life was like in Montana 60-70 million years ago. Created at U.C. Berkeley with support from the National Science Foundation, this is an extremely well-organized site.

tag(s): fossils (44), paleontology (41)

In the Classroom

Use this site as a paired or individual activity while learning about archaeology. The site is a little old and clunky, so teachers will need to preview it on the interactive whiteboard to show students how it works. To speed things along, have students write or type their own journal separately, rather than using the one provided by the site. Try a tool like Google Docs, reviewed here, making it easier to share and turn in after the fact.
