National Geographic's Flash-enhanced presentation on Australia's Great Barrier Reef offers layer on layer of great content about the reef ecosystem and the individual creatures that live there. Tired of the reef? Move on to the deep ocean and learn how its occupants interact with the reef environment. This one takes a few minutes to load, but it's well worth the wait.

his is an extensive site that documents the watershed, habitats, creatures, and human inhabitants that have an impact on the Chesapeake Bay ecosystem. There are detailed resources on each of these areas, and more than enough material to use either within the curriculum or as grist for student research at many levels. A little exploration should yield numerous instructional possibilities.

Well, as its title states, this site offers the basics on cartography. It's a very good summary that explains the origins of mapmaking, the terms (w/definitions), and also has a crossword puzzle. The info could easily be streamlined so the younger kids would understand the material. It also has a listing of suggested reading. Easy site to navigate and is extremely straightforward. Great site for anyone teaching maps.

In the Classroom

This would be an excellent introductory activity for students learning basic map-building skills. Have students look at the site in cooperative learning groups or pairs, with the intentions of noting the valuable information listed on this site. We recommend creating graphic organizers to guide students through the material as well as highlight what is most important. For help creating graphic organizers, try Mindomo, (reviewed here).

These maps are excellent for a History or Geography teacher attempting to refresh students on the political geography of an area. Before teaching a unit on the Middle East or Asia, refresh and quiz students with these worksheets to help with both map skills and understanding of the area. Often a weak point in student knowledge, it can never hurt to help students become more aware of political geography.
