In the ClassroomCreate a bookmark for Math Celebrity as an additional way to view problem solving steps. Share this site with students to use at home to review problem solving methods. Embed any specific page or topic into your website or blog for student use at home. The embed code can be found at the bottom of each page. Use this site as a model for step-by-step problem solving demonstrations. Have students use an online poster creator, such as Padlet, (reviewed here) to display their own problem solving work.

In the ClassroomUse FastFig to demonstrate solving problems and correct syntax on your interactive whiteboard or projector. Use this site for some "backward" teaching. Type in a problem and allow FastFig to solve it. Challenge students to explore the steps required to solve the problem. Share this site with students as a resource for checking homework answers. (It doesn't get them off the hook for providing explanations and step-by-step procedures for solving problems.)

Was disappointed that it didn't work in Firefox, but once I logged into Internet explorer it was fine. I teach younger students and it's not as useful as it would be for high school students.Amy, NJ, Grades: 1 - 6

With the correct information and exciting activities already created, teachers can concentrate on successfully using the information to develop student inquiry and increase the skills for investigating. Be sure to check out the recent additions to find what is new on the site. There are also links to featured lessons and resources along the side.
Grades6 to 12
In the ClassroomUse this activity to show how certain buildings can change aspects of happiness, health, and other factors. Brainstorm ways to improve aspects of a city prior to playing the game. Groups of students can even collaborate on a specific city. Students can report on various ways they improved their city including starting with smaller homes, green houses, or by improving large, older homes. Enter screenshots and specific information about the game play on a wiki or other site and research various communities that have achieved those changes. To take a screenshot simply Shift+ Command +4 on a Mac (saves to your Downloads) or Prtscrn key and PASTE on Windows. Propose similar changes in your own community at the end of the play and research. This would be an ideal activity leading up to Earth Day or during an environmental unit. Teachers of gifted could build an entire long term unit around it.
Grades6 to 10
In the ClassroomWAYT: What Are You Thinking? Use this technique as the students read the articles to mark comments, connections, and questions. Read the passages in guided reading groups to scaffold the instruction. Post an article and the questions in an online forum for students to discuss their answers. Challenge above-level readers to make observations about the writer's strategies. Use the articles' trending topics to meet the students' interests and engage reluctant readers. The questions are great to teach students about Question Answer Relationships (QAR). Model current event literature response techniques with the articles on the website.
GradesK to 12
In the ClassroomMake STEM a reading challenge. Share this list with students during your study of physics of structures, design, or basic concepts such as gravity. Have students choose a book they can connect to concepts you are studying in science class or have them choose a book of interest and generate a list of the questions they would like to learn about after reading the book. The non-fiction selections offer possible informational texts to practice Common Core science literacy skills.
Grades9 to 12
In the ClassroomUse this tool to research the history of writing, communication, and technology through the ages. Connect each of these discoveries with other events including political, religious, or social changes also occurring at the time. Assign cooperative learning groups different areas of this website to explore. Challenge students to use a mapping tool such as Mapskip (reviewed here) to create a map of their own (with audio stories and pictures included)!
Grades3 to 8
In the ClassroomCreate a class account and allow students to explore the site and use the interactives throughout the year. Create a link to games or videos for students to access at home. Challenge students to create a talking avatar using a photo or other image (legally permitted to be reproduced). The avatars can be used to explain one important step in cyber safety. Use a site such as Blabberize (reviewed here). Share this site with parents as an excellent resource to use at home. Why not have a cybersafety month throughout your school -- maybe early in the school year-- and encourage all parents to join in as part of a PTA/PTO event?
Grades4 to 12
In the ClassroomUse this site when researching science careers and scientists to be sure to give women their turn and to inspire another generation of female scientists. Share the video clips on your projector or interactive whiteboard. Use this site during Women's history month. Challenge your students to learn more about present-day famous women in STEM careers and create their own interactive books. Have students use Ourboox, reviewed here. Ourboox creates beautiful page-flipping digital books in minutes, and you can embed video, music, animation, games, maps and more.
Grades7 to 12
In the ClassroomThis site offers a window on American culture that you can use in comparing cultures. It is a great way to engage ESL/ELL teens as they practice English skills. Since the State Department created it, an AP Civics or Government class might even want to critique or discuss its portrayal of U.S. culture. Have ESL/ELL students work on individual laptops and explore this site alone or with a partner. Provide this link for students to access both in and out of the classroom. Challenge your students to collaboratively write the dialogue for an additional visit Trace might make to a community near you using Google Docs/Drive reviewed here. Your more technologically savvy students may like to create another version of a Trace visit to go along with the dialog! In a world language class, have students work collaboratively to create a visit to a cultural site using this game as a model.
Grades4 to 8
In the ClassroomIntroduce this site on your projector or Interactive Whiteboard. Use this site to increase scientific literacy in all students, not just those showing an interest in science. Designed in a game like format, students with a variety of interests and backgrounds will find this site interesting, entertaining, and informative. Be sure to keep a link to this site on your blog, wiki, or site or create a shortcut on a classroom computer. After students play with the activities, discuss the concepts learned and tie them into your unit on atoms and molecules.
Grades6 to 12
In the ClassroomUse this blog for students to find interesting information to learn from and report to others in the class (like Science current events.) Consider creating a blog for students to share information that they research and write about for understanding. Collect students' How, Why, and What questions for further research themselves and reporting to others. Or have students create their own science blogs using Throwww (reviewed here). This site allows you to create "quick and easy" blogs to be used one time only. There is no registration necessary!

In the ClassroomUse these newsletters to show students how their lives are connected to STEM achievements. Students can read and comment on specific articles or careers. Use a variety of these PDF's when researching various STEM careers or highlighting inventions and discoveries. Students can create a traditional or multimedia report on the information learned.
Grades5 to 10
In the ClassroomIn the classroom, use Figure This to help differentiate instruction for all levels, especially the high-achievers and gifted students. Allow students to work independently, or work in pairs to solve challenges. Introduce the challenge on your interactive whiteboard projector. Then allow students to dive into the challenge! Use for gifted enrichment, or even a Math Challenge Day for a reward. Offer extra credit for the number of challenges solved. Use as a model to allow students to create their own challenges. Add to your website as a fun resource for students and families.
Grades1 to 12
In the ClassroomUse the lesson plans to use the site to learn about resources and recycling. Be sure to discuss what is meant by "Reduce, reuse, recycle" in terms of resources and energy (Infographics and resources are helpful for this) and why recycling is not always the best answer. Do simpler activities or lessons with younger students during Earth Day or Earth Week. Include this link with other resources about resources and recycling. Have different groups each become an expert in the processing of one of the resources and discuss the common steps and problems involved in the recycling process.
Grades3 to 7
In the ClassroomIntroduce math concepts in a unique way, using Cyberchase adventures on your interactive whiteboard or projector. Use this site at your centers/stations to practice, use, and apply math and science skills. Put a link on your class website for students to use for review, reinforcement, and enrichment.

Search by activity or topic to find a project geared towards your students age range, curriculum, and ability to complete. In the ClassroomThis is worth some time to scroll through and watch the evolution of education throughout time. Share during professional development with other staff members. Especially interesting is the large number of events in recent time compared to just a few decades ago! Share with older students and brainstorm a list of what the class believes will be "next" in education. As your class talks about cultures, include this for discussion about the role of education in a culture.

Share the video on your projector or interactive whiteboard. Have cooperative learning groups view different videos and "report back" to the class about what they learned. Submit proposals to MIT for video explanations of any topic you wish. Ask students to address a question based on their knowledge, then watch videos for the scientific explanation.
