Use this tool any time that photos need to be edited for use on class blogs, wikis, or sites. In primary grades, use this tool to edit pictures from a field trip, science experiments, and more. Edit images you want to use in drag and drop sorting activities on your interactive whiteboard, such as food groups. Share the editing process with your younger students using your interactive whiteboard or projector. Edit a photo project together! Encourage older students to use this tool themselves to remove distracting backgrounds from images for projects or presentations. Language and special ed teachers will love being able to create uncluttered images to use in vocabulary activities.

Share and discuss photos or other images in real-time using Live. No registration is required. Live works only on Chrome and Firefox browsers. Drag and drop or upload images from your computer to Live to begin a session. Be sure to allow access to your computer's microphone for online conversations, or use the chat box if you prefer. The real power of LIVE is being able to "narrate" and discuss images orally, though. Copy or tweet the link to share the URL for your session. Once participants enter the session, the site's tools allow options for drawing using the brush tool, watermarks on images, and zooming in and out to share features of images.

tag(s): images (266)

In the Classroom

Use Live as an alternative to other screen sharing tools to maintain quality when discussing images. Use it with your 1:1 art class to discuss design principles and techniques in images or works of art. Suggest students use Live when collaborating on group art or media projects. Students can create or alter group products such as logos for their mock companies or political party. World language classes can use an image to spark conversation and vocabulary practice using this online tool, even if they are not in the same location! Set up a LIVE session with a partner class at another school for sharing images and the stories behind them. Share an image of a student's work using a Live session during a parent phone conference.

Memidex is a free online dictionary and thesaurus that will work on any computer or device that can access the Internet. A clear, simple, uncluttered layout and the fast access time make it a desirable choice for quick word access, especially when using a mobile device. Some of the features include auto-suggest for searches, definitions from many different references, etymology references, audio references, adult filtering, no obscure abbreviated labels, and audio pronunciations in North American and British English. Be aware: this site includes some words that are not appropriate for the classroom. There is an adult filter for obscenity, ethnic slurs, and other words deemed offensive. Read more about the adult filter by clicking on the link in the descriptive paragraph on the home page. If mobile devices don't have Java and cookies enabled, the filter won't work on them. Be sure students know the rules and boundaries when using this site.

Use Memidex on your interactive whiteboard (or projector) to explore word origins, definitions, and more. Set this site as the home page on classroom computers for student use. Be sure to share this site with parents for use at home too! In addition to defining the word or phrase, the dictionary has click-able audio recordings to hear how the word is pronounced in North American and British English. This site could be very useful for ESL/ELL students. Talk with your district technology department about including the adult filter as part of the security settings on servers. Any settings you "save" will only save on the computer being used.

Learn about Edgar Allen Poe and his literature through this eerie, interactive experience. Using video, comics, and websites, the program explores the historical backdrop of "The Pit and the Pendulum," i.e. the Spanish Inquisition. Find the many hidden links within the comics using your mouse cursor and with a QR code reader. Be sure to allow plenty of time for exploration of the many hidden features lurking in this site! To make sure you can fully explore the site, read information for the tools needed. The links to see the film lead only to the trailer for the film and ads to purchase the DVD. These are not needed to enjoy the interactive comic.

Homeroom is an online tool and mobile app to share your class photos privately with parents, students, and others. Create an album and invite people to view it. Each time you update it, the members will be notified. When you populate your album with photos, you can also add a comment. Access Homeroom and upload photos on any device. Initial registration requires either using the app (iOs or Android) or registering using your Google or Facebook account or using a phone number or email. Once registered, you can access the tool using any device using your username and password. Invite others from any device or computer by phone number or email address. They will become members and will be able to update your photo albums. You will be alerted about the new content. Albums are private. Only the people with the invite have access to the photos.

tag(s): DAT device agnostic tool (198), images (266), photography (160)

In the Classroom

Invite parents and students as you create albums of specific events such as field trips, service projects, hands-on activities, field experiences, class speakers, and more. Anywhere photos can be used to showcase achievement, this service would be a great resource. Use for any project, class explanation of concepts, experiments, or demonstrations. Resource teachers, speech teachers, or world language teachers can collect images into "albums" for students to practice/develop speech and vocabulary. In science class when having students do insect collections, instead of having them collect the actual specimens, have them take pictures using their phones or digital cameras. Have the students upload to the album at home, and then they can create a multimedia project with the pictures and statistics of the specimen. Students can snap a picture anywhere, with any device, and upload to the web to use in class or cooperative groups. This tool would be great for clubs and performance groups as well! Do you send a newsletter home to parents? Try creating a heading made from a collage of your latest class activity. Use a program such as Mosaic Maker, reviewed here, to create a collage. Though the content is private, monitor student photos and comments as nothing would be prohibited by Homeroom. You will be notified of all new content.

Use this tool anytime photos need to be edited for use on class blogs, wikis, or sites. In primary grades, use this tool to edit pictures from a field trip, science experiments, and more. Share the editing process with your younger students on your interactive whiteboard or projector. Edit the project together! Encourage older students to use this tool on images for projects or presentations. Use it to edit pictures to match historic looking pictures for reports or to set a mood. Of course, you will want to require that students give proper credit for any starter image they obtain from copyright-safe (CC licensed) sources.

Any student would appreciate having an online time/task management tool they can access anywhere, but learning support students and disorganized gifted students need one. If they are over 13 or have parent permission, this is perfect! You may want to model using this online tool to help middle and high school students learn better personal organization. Share this site on your interactive whiteboard or projector during the first week of school to help students set up their own accounts. Parents may appreciate learning about this site also. Use this site professionally to keep yourself organized! Make a demo account for a mythical student and organize it together so students can see how it works. Teachers in lower grades can use this tool for their own productivity.
