Create discussions about the aspects of credit building. Discuss the best ways to rebuild a credit score as well. Generate a list of personality traits or activities that a person would have or do if they were a person with a poor credit score or one with a better credit score. Agriculture - 4-U offers an explanation of where and how we get our food. Though developed for the United Kingdom, much of the information also applies to the United States or any other country. There are sections for teachers, learners, and the "Farm Yard." The teacher portion contains many links to videos, lessons, and activities divided into student age ranges from Foundation (preschool) through Secondary. The Farm Yard contains videos and data on crops, livestock, disease, and agricultural careers. The learner portion has sections to learn about crops, livestock, and careers. Although some activities are immediately available (especially those in the learners and Farm Yard portions), you can access everything on the site after completing the free trial application (free until further notice!) requiring your name, email, and school information.

Include this site during a unit on farming or careers. You can also include it in geography class discussions about use of natural resources and regional economies. Show videos on your interactive whiteboard or create a link on classroom computers. Challenge students to create a word cloud of terms about agriculture or farming using a tool such as Wordle reviewed here. Use an online tool such as the Interactive Two Circle Venn Diagram (reviewed here) to create a visual comparison of crops found in the United Kingdom verses those found in your area.

Reading, writing, critical thinking, and artistic expression activities are available for a wide range of abilities and grades. Start with Langston Hughes, "The Dream Keeper" and his collection of poetry. Explore an introduction to the Harlem Renaissance and black history or focus on goal-setting to make the dream come true. This collaborative project is created by teachers for teachers with a step-by-step approach. The resources include ideas, lesson plans, printable handouts, opportunities to collaborate, and examples.

Save the planet, one load of laundry at a time with Project Laundry List. This website is dedicated to encouraging people to use clotheslines and other sensible alternatives to wasteful energy consumption. Don't miss the Cost Calculator: a spreadsheet that you download to your computer, enter the amount and type of laundry you do, and automatically calculate energy and water costs of clothes care. It even shows your washer's carbon dioxide emissions! The calculator suggests easy ways to reduce costs, which, in turn reduces your impact on the environment. In the Programs Education section, find "The Clothesline Plan." It provides strategies about how to get involved with the clothesline, cold water washing movement. Featured here, among other good laundry history resources, is also "National Hanging Out Day" which is used to educate and create awareness about energy savings through the use of clotheslines.

During environmental science units or Earth Day, use this to have students calculate what their own households spend to care for clothing. Have students consider different tips for reducing environmental impact and saving money. As a homework assignment, have students implement two changes for two weeks. Have parents sign off on a log form to verify student participation. (Parents will love the extra help and possible money savings!) In the Classroom
Use this site as part of an introduction to a consumer awareness lesson, or personal finance unit. The infographic would also be a good graphic for teaching chart reading and the interpretation of visual data. The information is accessible enough to be useful and appealing for a wide variety of skill levels including life skills classes, middle school students, or high school students studying budgeting or accounting. English Language learners might also profit (ouch again) from information about American currency. Use this as an intro to a unit about the Fed in an economics class. After students explore the graphic on their own or on an interactive whiteboard or projector, have them create their own infographics to show the path of money in local businesses or where their own "dollar" goes. A more creative idea would be to have students tell the "story" of the life of a dollar and the impact it has on those who handle it. Imagine a site that allows you to discover and share websites, find and create custom quizzes, create a class website, track student comprehension, and save, share, and reuse content. You will find all of these features and more at this site for teachers preK- grade 8 (still in beta). At the time of this review, the entire site was free - so no need to worry about what is included in a basic vs premium membership. After creating a free account, go to your dashboard to add new content on your 19Pencils site through searches and favorites. There is a special section called My Class Page that students will see when going to your site. This includes items you have chosen as favorites and class quizzes. To share this content on your current website or blog, there is a widget code to copy and paste. 19Pencils also has a blog, Facebook page, and Twitter feeds to follow. The site has some short videos to help you become comfortable with its many features.

Graphs show the difference between cost of groceries, housing, utilities, transportation, and health care in the two places. A comparison shows how much salary you would need to maintain the present standard of living in the other location. You can also compare the cost of living to other major cities.

Use this tool to determine how far a dollar goes in various locations. Allow students the opportunity to play with a standard salary and occupation to look at the differences in costs of living. Report on trends for cities in different areas of the country. Create a list locally of the various items that would be found in each category and the salary for that occupation where you live. Create a budget that allows for savings and vacation or large purchases. Use the data for practice with graphing and creating infographics. See a new way to look at the USA (or the World, or Japan). This site resizes countries on the map in relation to various issues: population, resources, employment, religion, death, business, the environment, and more. Each main topic also has numerous sub-topics to explore. Maps adjust to correspond to data. For example, click on "unemployed" on the U.S. map and you see the states in proportion to the number of unemployed workers. Mouse over the state and you can see the percentage of unemployed workers. A list on the right ranks states from 1 to 50 for the percentage of unemployed (or other specified topic). New maps/topics are constantly being added, and you can make suggestions as to what types of maps you would like to see.

When studying a specific topic in class (unemployment, AIDS, drunk driving, religion, energy resources, crops, etc.), share this site on your interactive whiteboard or projector. Ask students why certain state or countries might differ from others. Are there issues that appear to be related, such as alcoholism and unemployment? Is it cause/effect or simply a coincidence? During election years, explore political leanings/polls and other statistics from this site. Have cooperative learning groups explore a specific topic (or state) and possible reasons for the data. To show what they have learned from this site, challenge groups to create an online graphic to share using Tabblo reviewed here. Have students create an online presentation combining several maps from this site using Nota (reviewed here) or another reviewed presentation tool from the TeachersFirst Edge. Remember that you can always take screenshots of a map using PrtScrn key in Windows (then paste it where you want it) or using Command+Shift+4 on a Mac to save the image on your computer. Use the screenshots in explanations and presentations.

Pinterest is a virtual pinboard that lets you organize and share all the beautiful things you find on the web. Although not specifically designed for educators, there are many resources and uses for this site in your classroom. To create/add to your own pinboards, register for free. Browse the site without registration. To search, go to Everything (near the top) and choose Education. You will find images with a short caption. Clicking on a picture gives you the option to Repin or Like. If you have an account, you can Repin the picture to a pinboard you have titled and created within your account. Click on the image again to visit the original site where the image was posted. Often this is just what you are looking for to learn specific details. You can also search Pinterest for specific items such as Guided Reading, File Folder Activities, or other classroom needs. Pinterest members can "follow" other users and see their new items as they add them to their own pinboards. There is a related Facebook app and iPad/iPhone app.

In the Classroom
Use this site as a resource for finding printables and other items for classroom use. Create your own pinboards for organizing classroom resources found on the web. Create pinboards for students to view and/or add to as a whole class activity, such as "things that use energy," food groups, or groups of items for primary level vocabulary/practice (clothing items, farm animals, clock faces for telling time, etc.). Maybe even create "which one does not belong?" pinboards for PreK and early grades to view and change on an interactive whiteboard and repeat at home. In higher grades, make pinboards for different subjects or units where you collect videos, images, classroom blogs and websites, etc. Share your pinboards with students and parents by putting the link on your class website. Challenge your older students to create their own pinboards as a research project. Follow other teachers using Pinterest to see items that they are adding and using in their classrooms. IBM asks us to imagine what a "smarter" city would be like, looking at various aspects of city life: education, business, transportation, energy, public safety and so on. The site is interactive and graphically interesting and attractive. There is an introductory video, and each of the aspects examined has links to subcategories to explore.

In the Classroom
Students love to imagine what the future might be like. This site can help frame some of the questions that can start the discussion. What might schools be like in the future? How can technology help make cities "smarter"? How can transportation problems be solved using computers? The site is perfect for use on an interactive whiteboard (or projector) and could be helpful in a civics/government discussion on the allocation of resources, or on a unit on consumer awareness. The site would also be perfect for a discovery unit in a pull out program for gifted students. Another plus? Each of the individual sections can be downloaded so bandwidth issues won't disrupt the flow of your presentation.

FIT by WebMD is a great website to promote health and healthy opportunities for students of all ages. This is a health/fitness site that is designed for three different stages of childhood: Fit Jr. (PreK- elementary) , Fit Kids (upper elementary and middle school) , and Fit Teen (secondary). Explore four different areas of health: Food, Move, Recharge, and Mood. The site offers a far healthier approach to fitness than simply weight. Highlights include an age appropriate body mass index calculator, video clips, audio books, recipes, interactive challenges, age-appropriate articles, and more. There are also quizzes and many ways to earn FitQ points. There is an entire Parents area so everyone can be involved together.
A free registration process allows kids and teens to track personal accomplishments. Email is required ONLY for teen accounts, not "kids." The registration information required is minimal and is legally appropriate for the age level.

In the Classroom
Check school policy on setting up student accounts or work together with parents on this. Parents (or teachers) can use the Fit Jr. with younger students. Read the audio books together, try the interactives, and read the articles together. The Fit Kids portion of this website would be great for fifth and sixth grade physical education or health classes. Set up a classroom challenge for students to gain at least 30,000 fit points per week for four weeks. Include families for greater success. Have students track and monitor their progress over that time with the site. Tracking their own progress will be educational and fun! Keep a class "Workout Wiki" that can serve as a meeting place and neutral location to store exercise goals and nutritional changes. Maybe even include a recipe area for fit foods.

With great graphics and an available phone application, this tool is so versatile and easy that even younger students could learn to use it. The database of food includes restaurant, grocery, and generic food brands and types.

In the Classroom
Try using "Lose It!" in health classes as early as fifth grade to help students become aware of how they spend their calories in a day and just how much they are consuming. Sometimes just this awareness is enough to help some kids stay healthier. Have students do a baseline record what they eat and do with no set rules for three days to a week. Have students analyze with their free weekly reports: what they consumed, how much, and what vitamins and other nutrients that they may need to increase. If students are comfortable sharing information with each other, have them compare reports to get a better and more realistic view of their intake. Have students create a plan to make small changes to diet and activity for a week at a time and then have them check their reports again. This could be a year long, month long, or two week long process. Depending on the incidence of childhood obesity or malnutrition in your area, you can adjust this to fit your needs. If you are concerned about student privacy, create an account for a fictitious person that the entire class can use to analyze hypothetical food intake and more.Add your comments below (available only to members) | Become a Member

This website is a phenomenal source for information and news. The philosophy of Big Think is that as we "move to the knowledge era" that you will be able to better function if you know more and understand what you know. This website was awarded one of TIME magazine's best websites of 2011 for news and information. Please screen any articles that you wish to share BEFORE sharing with your students. Some content is NOT appropriate for the classroom. This is not a site you want to send students off to explore on their own.

In the Classroom
Choose a story that relates to your topic that you are teaching such as science or even music with a story such as "How Music is Good for Your Brain." Share the story with your students. Discuss the writings, and then use it as a platform on how students should approach the things that they are learning in class. This way they develop critical thinking skills and extract the most important information and leave the accessory facts to the side. Assign specific articles to cooperative learning groups to read and explore together. Then have students create a multimedia project to share with the class using one of the many TeachersFirst Edge tools reviewed here.
