Ever use a number or statistic in a presentation and see the eyes of audience gloss over in misunderstanding or cluelessness? Perhaps you have trouble making number sense out of large figures. Try NumberQuotes! Simplistic and to the point, this tool allows you to enter a number into the search bar, and it will generate a list of quotes related to your number. Follow directions about the number entry format (words or numerals). Find fast, easy comparisons at your fingertips without tedious hours of detailed research.

tag(s): number sense (97), statistics (122)

In the Classroom

This tool is great when discussing numbers that are difficult for students to assimilate, such as exponents or population growth. In elementary grades, use it for 100th day celebrations! Help students develop number sense about large figures in economics, social studies, or science. Share this site with students on your interactive whiteboard (or projector) and type in the number such as the population of a country. It will then generate comparisons that are more student friendly. Keep this reference handy as a link on your class web page to help students comprehend numbers they encounter in informational texts or even in math class.

Comments

This is the go-to site for Promethean flipchart downloads. Most files were created by teachers. The only downside is that the files are hit-or-miss. There are many gems, but you might have to browse some not-so-great files to find them. Tim, , Grades: 0 - 6

Math Puzzles is an excellent resource for many different types of math puzzles. There are several different sections to the site such as logic puzzles, algebraic thinking, geometry, probability, and more. Choose a topic and a puzzle for a clear explanation of the problem. Each page has a link to print the page or to send as email. Along with the answers to each puzzle, there is a thorough explanation of the thought process used to reach its conclusion. If you need more information, there is a button to "Ask the Expert." This link goes to resources for math articles as well as frequently asked questions. The Number Sense puzzles would be of particular interest to those who love mindstretchers.

Challenge students to create a talking avatar using a photo or other image (legally permitted) using a tool such as Blabberize (reviewed here). Use the avatars to explain steps used to solve one of the problems on the site. You might consider using the problems for extra credit or homework. These puzzles would be great to use when differentiating work for students. Allow some students to solve problems on their own and others to work in cooperative groups to solve them. Include a Favorite Puzzles page on your class wiki for students to share their favorites from this collection and tell why they like it.

Find math advice, tips, ideas, games, and e-books to help bring math alive. Activities focus on two age groups, 3 - 5 and 5 - 7. The free e-books have math themes. The site's origin is British, so the "maths" curriculum or terms may be slightly different from the U.S. But numbers are still numbers! The standards are from the U.K. Don't miss the "jargon busters" under the Expert Help menu for parents to understand the math terms teachers may use. Although the site has links to items for sale, there is enough free material to be worthwhile. On some of the interactives you must click the "mark it" check mark to see if your answer is correct or not.

Rhymenlearn offers twenty-five "squeaky clean" math and science rap videos about a variety of topics. They are constantly adding to this site, so you will probably find even more than twenty-five! Sort by math or science using the tabs at the top. Subtitles are given along with the YouTube video. These videos are perfect for the classroom. While seeing a Heart Rap or Pi Rap may make you giggle, many learn best from hearing words to music. These are simple to understand and include many words and diagrams. You can also sign up for more free math and science raps with your email (no SPAM). YouTube videos use Flash. If your school blocks YouTube, then they may not be viewable. You could always view the videos at home and bring them to class "on a stick" to share. Use a tool such as KeepVid reviewed here to download the videos from YouTube.
