AlgebraLAB highlights the connection between algebra (and many other math subjects) and science. Although this website may appear as an in-depth informational algebra site, there is A LOT more to explore! AlgebraLAB includes 10+ links to various topics: Lessons, Practice, Careers (how Algebra and science are used in countless careers), Directions (offers insight on how to use this site), Word Problems, Study Aids, a Glossary, and several others. Many activities are interactive. This site requires Windows Media Player. You can get it from the TeachersFirst Toolbox page.

This informational site is a MUST HAVE in any secondary math class. Be certain to save this site in your favorites. The site highlights countless algebra topics (and other math areas). Share the information on your interactive whiteboard or projector. Share the link on your class website so students can access the site both in and out of the classroom. Have cooperative learning groups explore one of the topics presented at the lessons or activities link. Have the groups create a video to share what they learned. Share the videos on your interactive whiteboard or projector using a tool such as TeacherTube (explained here). Differentiate! You can easily find extension activities for your more-able students to do while you reinforce the basics with others.

Celebrate Pi Day (March 14) with this WebQuest! Allow your geometry students to go on a quest to explore 'pi' on the web. Please note: one of the activities requires students to have access to the Geometer's Sketchpad Activity Book. However, this activity could easily be skipped. If you are interested in purchasing the book, the ISBN number is #9781559535816. Other assignments include creating a video, writing and essay, and more.

In the Classroom

Have students work in cooperative learning groups to complete this Webquest. Share the introduction on your projector or interactive whiteboard. Rather than having students use YouTube to share videos, as the WebQuest suggests, have students try an educational video sharing site such as TeacherTube TeacherTube (explained here). For the Youtube video on the site, teachers whose school filters the site may not be able to access it. Instead, rip the video from a site such as KeepVid reviewed here to download the videos from YouTube.

This simple website should inspire you to make your own WebQuest to invigorate learning. (This one used Googlepages, but there are many other internet hosting sites that offer free or nearly free pages. This site features engaging movie scenes (in Quicktime and Flash formats) that involve Math problems. Beside each clip and title is an explanation of the Math concept in the clip. Most are secondary level, but a few are for lower grades. If you click on the TITLE of the movie, you will be lead to a site to purchase, rate, and/or view the movie in its entirety. To avoid this confusion, be sure to click on the "Play the Flash Version or QuickTime" links. These links lead directly to the "math clip." Links at the bottom lead to other movie collections websites.

In the Classroom

Use the links "Begin of Lectures in College teaching" and "The end of lectures in college teaching" to identify effective and ineffective teaching elements at all levels. Use these clips for anticipatory set or activators at the start of a lesson or introduction of a concept. Share the video clips on your interactive whiteboard or projector. Discuss the concepts as a class or have students work in cooperative learning groups. See if students can identify any other movie or television show that has used math concepts. If time permits, have students create their own mini-dramas that include discussion of math concepts within the story.

View concepts on individual pages that house interactive applets (mini-programs) and downloadable, zipped versions. Depending on your computer's security settings, you may need to "tell" your computer to "trust" the source of the activity before it will "Run." Explore Math resources for Art, Music, and Physics. Some of the available activities have demos with audio explanations, as well. Be aware this wiki allows users to add content. You must log-in to add content, but you still may want to preview for accuracy before you share this site with your students. The users appear to all be math teachers, but some activities may be created by students.

This interesting web activity enables students to create and print calendars in either PDF format or PostScript format. Students can mark holidays and birthdays in the PostScript format. Once the calendar is printed, the website provides explicit instructions about how to fold the paper into a 12 sided calendar. This website is a fabulous tool to reinforce geometry skills, calendar math, following directions, and reading. The files are available in PDF format and require Adobe. What a fabulous craft to complete at the beginning of the calendar year (January). Take your class to the computer lab and have the students fill in the blanks to print their calendars. Then use an interactive whiteboard or projection screen to share the instructions for folding the calendar.

This site uses Google Earth to teach Math! If your school does not allow access or installation of this free software, use this site as justification for the power of GE in the curriculum. Use higher level thinking skills and provide active learning by using the lessons on this site. Visit the "Lessons" page to view lessons grouped into four categories: Concept Lessons, Project-Based Learning, Exploratory, and Measurement. Use the "Community" page to collaborate or submit lesson ideas. Click on the "Update" page to view new lessons or resources added. The "Resource" page contains links to other sites and tutorials that are useful. NOTE that you must have the FREE Google Earth reviewed hereinstalled on your computer to use these terrific ideas.

Be aware that the "Community" link has been moved off-site and is designed for teachers, not students.

This site, designed especially for middle school students, highlights the basic foundations of math, geology, chemistry, physics, and biology. Although this site is recommended for middle school students, it is also appropriate for high school students studying the subject areas. It is mainly a "text" site, without interactives. However, this is a great resource for explaining complex topics, researching specific topics in science and math, and much more. Each general area (i.e. geology or biology), includes several sub-topics. There are also links to activities for students, project ideas, and Teacher's Guides. There are two caveats: there are some advertisements -- nothing too distracting -- AND some of the suggested activities include "buying" a book from Amazon. You do NOT need to purchase anything to take advantage of this free resource!

This site offers FREE interactive math tools: qualitative grapher, piecewise linear grapher, linear transformer, function analyzer, quadratic transformer, system solver, plopit, and proportioner. Originally the interactives required special software, but they now run directly from the web site without any special installation or download. The interactives all include a real-time connection between math concepts (graphical or symbolic) and the representations. The activities provide visual illustrations to enhance algebra class. They allow for accelerated learning. And you are even able to save images to share with classmates.

The "Qualitative Grapher" demonstrates the meaning of a function and see how it can be seen as something changing over time. The "Proportioner" highlights scale and proportion and allows you to compare image dimensions. All of the other individual activities highlight other upper level math skills. This site requires Java and Adobe Acrobat. You can get both from the TeachersFirst Toolbox page.

Math train is a "kids teaching kids" math project created from Mr. Marcos (and his students) of Lincoln Middle School. Browse student created, teacher created, or captioned math videos easily found using the search function. Videos can be viewed without a login. Most videos focus on a very specific topic and are short in length. Use the url or the embed code to share the video and add comments. Teachers and students can join math train and upload videos to teach math concepts to others. Registration requires an email account. Check your district's acceptable use policy regarding student use of email addresses. This site requires Flash. You can get it from the TeachersFirst Toolbox page. Note: the "we are upgrading" message does not prevent you from using the site!

Use this site as a resource to teach students basic and more complex math problems. Use your interactive whiteboard or projector to share this site with your students. Students can also be assigned a similar project in the classroom for peer teaching and learning. Use a class website or wiki to show your student-created video or register on the Math train site to upload video in this education-specific environment. (Of course you will want to check your school policies on sharing student work online. You might even use the Record feature of your interactive whiteboard software, if your computer has the memory to handle it. Have students view a video and create problem sets for other students to solve. Students can identify potential real life problems and the math skill necessary to solve it. This is definitely a site that you will want to save in your favorites and visit often (they add new videos frequently). Be sure to provide this link on your class website, so students can search the site when confused about a specific concept or for some extra practice before a test.

Let math move YOU through different areas of math practice! Choose an animal character and customize the color of the collar, fur, and tail. Choose your grade range prior to play. Other options include saving your character to begin or registering to create a locker for extra benefits, including access to new characters and monitoring of your progress. . Use the arrows on the keyboard to move along to different math problems. Areas vary by age level, but examples include Music (Pythagorean Pavilion), Sports, Fashion and feature facts, quizzes, polls, flashcards, or a game that can be accessed for learning opportunities. Facts have links that allow students to connect to more knowledge. Tutorial help is available with the quizzes. Background music which is lively can also be turned off for better concentration. Enter Math Moves University for worksheet practice on many math topics downloaded as a pdf document. A math dictionary is also available. Clicking on the navigation along the top can also take you to various areas.

Opportunities to register pop up during play but are not required at this site.
If you choose to have your students register, please be aware of your district's requirements and acceptable use policy for using student user names, passwords, and emails.

Each category has numerous interactive activities included. The site is frequently updated. There are some small advertisements at the site. This site is simple to use and offers a wealth of options for many grade levels. The activities are not time-consuming and offer simple explanations with the applets.

The website features three main topics; The Straight Line, Vectors, and The Circle. Each of the topics includes buttons for "Revise" or "Test." The "revise" button offers a detailed review of the topic. (Revise is the word used by the British to convey the American word Review.) The website also includes a Site Guide (to assist teachers, parents, and students in navigating the site) and an "Ask a Teacher" link for students to read previous questions from students (and the answers) about specific difficult concepts. Since this site was created by the UK, Americans may notice some slight language differences. Much of the information is available in a printable format. A few of the activities require Flash. Show difficult-to-understand concepts on the interactive whiteboard or projector. This unusual website shares the "uniqueness" of a multitude of numbers. The numbers range from 0 - 9,999. This website teaches you what the only even prime number is, what a narcissistic number is, what the smallest number with 14 divisors is, and a LOT of other interesting mind-stretching information. The highlight of this website is the ability to click on math terms to learn more about the topic.

In the Classroom

This is one of those sites that you have see to appreciate. Share the site on an interactive whiteboard. In more advanced classes, project a number on the screen as students walk in. Have students try to figure out what might make this number "special." Have students share their responses. This is a great "number of the day/mind-stretcher of the day" activity.

Or have students work on individual computers. Choose several of the numbers that relate to a topic that you are teaching (such as the square root), and have individual students learn about the number and then teach the class what they learned. Extend the idea by having students create "what's special" PowerPoint slides or wiki pages about favorite numbers. What better way to develop true number sense and excitement about math as a mental game.

Use Math mistakes to uncover the most common math errors and perhaps learn a little more math as well. This site has "Real Mistakes from Real Student Work" and "Math Facts Students Should Know." Browse "Common Algebra Mistakes," "Common Trigonometry Mistakes," and "Common Calculus Mistakes" by using the drop down menus along the top or through the brightly colored buttons. Each area is also broken down into smaller subject areas such as "Pre-algebra" and "Radical Expressions" with several examples given for each. Each example provides the problem and the example mistake that is made. Rolling your mouse over the problem provides a clue to the error, while rolling over the correction area provides the right answer. There are also explanations of the errors and how to avoid them. Choosing the drop down on the example page allows the student to view as a plain web page or as a pdf file. Other links include "Algebra facts," "Trigonometry facts," and "Calculus facts" which contain flash cards and learning center activities. Note: Links to Amazon for math books of interest are listed, as well as a blog link and links to apparel for sale. Steer students clear of these areas. This site requires Adobe Acrobat. In the Classroom

Use the flashcards and learning center information to reinforce material taught in class. Students can also look at the examples to make a class hint list of "how to avoid mistakes in our math class." Students can use this information to review incorrect homework and test questions. Have students take turns presenting the most commonly missed questions and how to find the correct answers. Have students correct their own mistakes from a test or homework assignment by using the site. Have students analyze the mistakes first before they roll over to view the hints and the corrections. If you use an interactive whiteboard, the rollovers will not appear as easily, so you can ask students to find them first.

Will The Simpsons TV show engage your students? Peruse the site to find examples of Simpson clips that can be used as a springboard for discussions or instruction of math functions. The "Guide to Mathematics and Mathematics on the Simpsons" link includes episodes from each season. Another link, "Girls just want to have Sums," has several math and cognition articles worth reading, and a text transcript of a presentation providing a class example of engaging students using the Simpsons.

Of greater use is the link to "Classroom Activity Sheets" that provides engaging ideas for using Simpsons' scenarios to solve problems in class. Note: These are thought-provoking activities that are open ended and require considerable critical thinking. Examples include: "Are the Simpsons 2D or 3D?", "2D universes," "Pi," "Blackboard Equations," and "The Simpsons Lottery." At the top of the Activity Sheet page is a link for "suggestions" for successfully implementing these activities as well as cautions for changing math gender bias in society and the classroom.

As the name suggests, this website offers numerous math videos. The videos answer specific questions (sent in by students). General topics include numbers and their properties, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, percents, geometry, measurement, data, word problems, and advanced topics. The website currently features 20-30 videos. New ones are frequently added. Students and teachers are able to send in specific math questions, but the response time is currently "on delay." The videos are mainly audio with simple illustrations. Each video is short in length and requires Flash. You can get it from the TeachersFirst Toolbox page..

In the Classroom

Why not print a pattern onto cardstock or other thick paper. Then project the image (that you printed for your students) onto a projection screen or interactive whiteboard, while students work independently at their seats. Before you pass out the paper copies, have them view the projected image and predict what it will be.

These shapes can also serve as creative study aids for all subject areas, especially for students who need engaging ways to review. Have students write key terms and questions on the "faces" before assembling the figures, then "roll" them as a study game, testing each other to define or explain terms.
