Part of a larger Canadian site designed to help secondary school students make career and educational decisions, this section is focused on career choice. There are a number of nice personality and abilities quizzes that offer career guidance. Some of the questionnaires are printable worksheets (requiring Acrobat Reader), and some are on-line and generate feedback automatically. One of the instruments generates a Myers-Briggs style personality type.

tag(s): careers (132), psychology (64)

In the Classroom

College and career planning cause significant angst among high school students. While none of what is posted on the site will tell students what they ought to do or where they ought to go, they will certainly provide some good insight and can help open a dialogue about these important choices. These activities should not be limited to the guidance counselors, but can be used in other classroom contexts with high school students. Be sure to provide this link on your class website for families to explore together.

This very simple site, created by an anonymous puzzle-lover, is a treasury for logic problems and lateral thinking puzzles to use in your classroom or beyond. Click on the puzzle type you want. Use them as brain warm-ups in a math or science class before venturing into problem-solving or inquiry process or simply to engage the brains before starting any activity. There are different levels of logic and different types of lateral thinking puzzles, each with a hint before revealing the complete answer. These puzzles would also be useful for gifted enrichment.

If you don't have time to spend on these in class as often as you would like, print out a single lateral thinking or logic problem each week for your bulletin board and let the students argue about it all week. Or include this link on your teacher website for the students to access outside of class. This site is a life-saver for your study hall the day before a vacation!

Use your ipod, phone or computer to record the chants, songs, jump rope rhymes, or circle games that your students enjoy. Then submit them to the database so the students can hear themselves on the net. They can also listen to recordings made by other classes. Be part of a new way of recording oral history! Include this activity as art of your study of history and the songs people sang on the railroads, on riverboats, or as they immigrated.

Use a clickable national map to analyze the 2006 races for governor, senate, and house in all 50 states. See recent polling data, historical trends, and even predict outcomes to see their impact on Congress as a whole. You can save your "scenarios" for future reference. Note: you must join the New York Times online (FREE), a valuable resource for any classroom. You can make one account, and multiple computers can log in at once. Just don't forget your user name and password!

Although this resource was created for the 2006 election, the background information is valuable for teaching about elections in general and for comparing elections as part of U.S. history.

This would be a great site to visit repeatedly throughout the ramp-up to the election. It would be terrific on an interactive whiteboard. You could also assign students to create their own log-ins and generate their own scenarios. based on their own research (encourage ownership!). Then compare their predictions with the actual results. Or role-play groups as they present their scenarios in Republican (or Democratic) National Committee budget meetings and decide strategies.

Though short, this article provides teachers and parents with an awareness as to the extent that cyber bullying can go. Discuss with students the consequences of online-bullying, and use this article to show the effects it can have on it's victims.Encourage students to bring the article home to parents, or take the middle man out and post it on a teacher wiki or webpage to allow parents instance access. This would be an appropriate prerequisite before a project that requires virtual interaction, such as googledocs, (reviewed here), or any other online classroom resource.

We have yet to find a definitive career planning web site, but this offering from the US Departments of Labor and Education does a nice job of helping students sort out career options by both industry and education level. There's also a listing of which industries are growing most rapidly. While the site include many professions requiring a 4-year degree, job titles like engineer, physician, and attorney that require the most training are curiously absent.
