TeachersFirst Reading Treks create a virtual field trip of resources about a piece of literature or text using the My Maps feature of Google Maps. This Reading Trek provides inspiration and suggestions for using the trade book, A Long Way from Chicago. During the time of the Great Depression and the beginning of WWII, Joey and Mary Alice, city children from Chicago, spend a week each August with their eccentric Grandma Dowdel in her rural home town. Over the eight years the story takes place, they learn to appreciate their Grandma's spunkiness and get to experience many situations that their parents would never allow them to encounter. Use our robust Instructional Guide with students in grades 4-8. Content correlates to Common Core Standards, ISTE Student Standards, National Core Art Standards, and National Curriculum Standards for Social Studies. Discover the many suggested classroom uses for this resource found on the Instructional Guide (PDF). Consider using the historical information and primary sources from the book to have students create timelines of the important events throughout the book, beginning with American prosperity, the Great Depression, and into World War II. Find a variety of free online timeline creation tools here. Using the map and locales, trace and then calculate distances for Joey and Mary Alice's journeys back and forth to Grandma Dowdel's home. Use Google My Maps, reviewed here, to create and share custom maps that include information about events and important information about the time.

Google Jamboard is a collaborative, online whiteboard application. Use the tool options to access the pen, eraser, add sticky notes, and upload images. Jamboard also includes some limited options to change the background. Add "frames" to create whiteboard displays similar to a slide show. Email the link to your board to add collaborators using the share icon. Be sure to select the drop-down box to add collaborators as editors, not just viewers. When finished, use the three dots near the top of the page to rename your Jamboard, download your work as a PDF, save as an image. All work automatically saves within your Google Drive account. In October of 2024 Google Jamboard will sunset (close down). Jamboards will not be supported after December 31, 2024. Import your current Jamboards into Figjam, reviewed here, using the "Import" button so you don't lose access to those files after Jamboard shuts down.

Use Jamboard on your interactive whiteboard (or with a projector) to share and highlight information for students. When finished, save and share as images for students to access in Google Classroom or on your class website. Enable the collaboration options for students to use when planning projects or as a tool for recording and sharing information. For example, ask groups working together on a science experiment to use this tool to share images and annotations throughout the experiment. Save Jamboard slides as images in digital portfolios. If you don't have a Microsoft Office subscription, no need to worry, access and create PowerPoints online with the free version found at the Office Online site. Start from scratch with a blank presentation or choose from the many templates on the site. After selecting a template, add text, images, draw, and incorporate all of the features of PowerPoint. The default option includes the Simplified (single line) Ribbon, turn it off to view the enhanced Ribbon with additional customization options. PowerPoints created at the online site save automatically to your OneDrive account that is accessible from any device. Use the share link to copy the link and email your presentation.

Suggested prompts employ information found on the front page of the newspaper as the starting point for KWL (what you know, want to know, what you learned) charts, and exploration of graphs and charts. Additional activities include questions that promote critical thinking and debate, along with links to resources to use within these debates.

Be sure to bookmark this site as an important resource for lessons about the coronavirus and also as a resource for implementing online teaching activities. Incorporate ideas and activities found on this site into a blended learning system such as ActivelyLearn, reviewed here or Curipod, reviewed here. Both of these sites include features to create remote lessons with text, videos, and quizzes and provide educators instant feedback on student understanding. As students develop an understanding of the effects and makeup of the coronavirus, use Annotely, reviewed here, to upload and label an image sharing their knowledge. For example, have younger students upload a picture of their home, then label different surfaces with a short sentence on how they can spread or receive germs. For older students, ask them to use Annotely to label the different areas found in the community that leads to the spread of disease.

Consider using the historical information and primary sources from the book to have students create timelines of the important events during the period of this story that took place in 2013. Find a variety of free online timeline creation tools located here. Use Google My Maps, reviewed here to create and share custom maps that include information about hate crimes around the world. As students conduct online research, use Fiskkit, reviewed here as a collaborative discussion tool. Use Fiskkit to share the link of any online article with students, then the site's tools provide the opportunity to highlight and add comments to areas within the article by users.

This Reading Trek provides inspiration and suggestions for using Refugee, written by Alan Gratz. Use the robust teaching guide with students in grades 6-9 as they learn about the struggles of Joseph and his family as they escape from Nazi Germany. American Born Chinese recounts the tale of three characters: Jin Wang, who moves to another area with his family to find that he's the only Chinese-American at his new school; the Monkey King, subject of one of the oldest Chinese tales; and Chin-Kee, who is typical of the negative Chinese stereotype and is destroying his cousin Danny's life. Their lives and stories meet up with an unforeseen turn in this current tale. Discover their journey to their identity and purpose in life while struggling with others' prejudices, especially how it applies to racism.
