Get inspired by digital writing tools that facilitate the planning and implementation of powerful, engaging lessons that support literacy standards! Through the exploration of three digital writing tools, understand how these tools can scaffold instruction for each component of the writing process -- prewrite, draft, revise, edit, and publish. Engaged students who understand the writing process produce more successful work. Join us to see how you can improve student organization, collaboration, storytelling, and decision-making within the writing process by using these digital tools. As a result of this session, teachers will: 1. Understand ways different digital writing tools can scaffold instruction; 2. Identify ways digital writing can increase student engagement; and 3. Plan for the use of digital writing tools in their classroom to support the writing process. This session is appropriate for teachers at all technology levels.

The seven-page download includes one page with information about the chart and six additional pages for display. Although described as a tool for encouraging positive math attitudes, this chart works well for any subject or content area.

Share this anchor chart with students and post it on a bulletin board to remind students to reflect upon their work and learning process. As discussed on the information for the chart, provide students with badges for demonstrating the different qualities found on the chart. Instead of a printable badge, use a digital badge creation tool such as Open Badges, reviewed here, to create unique badges to share with students. Include students in reflection and developing positive attitudes by encouraging them to use this anchor chart as an example to create their acronym and learning attitude goals. Use Canva Edu, reviewed here, to design and share anchor charts to print and display in your classroom and online.

Find ideas for science activities using everyday household items, learn from engaging videos, play games, and complete professional development courses at this fantastic site offered by the Museum of Science and Industry, Chicago. Choose the Science at Home activities to find engaging activities to complete at home, such as making slime or creating a rubber band bungee cord to drop an egg safely. Each activity includes a list of items needed, instructions, and a simple explanation of the science concept. Many activities also include video demonstrations. The video portion of the site shares information on various topics such as hatching baby chicks and understanding forces used in elevators. Be sure to visit the educators' part of the site that includes directions for learning labs, science education webinars, and Jr. Science Cafes, sharing discussions with professionals in the medical field and the impact of COVID.

This site is a must-have for all teachers of science. Bookmark the resources found on the site to use when planning science lessons. Share the science education webinars with your peers for professional development sessions. Share the at-home lessons with parents in your classroom newsletters or updates; consider sharing a monthly activity for students to complete at home. If necessary, create travel kits for students who don't have the needed resources at home. Another option is to ask a volunteer to conduct labs and experiments with students during center time at school. Engage students using Flip, reviewed here, to provide a prompt for students to respond on a video sharing the results of their experiments. Dr. Universe investigates those tough questions submitted by elementary and middle school students and teams up with professors, researchers, and other experts to provide fact-based answers. Each week she posts one big question to answer. Additional information on the site includes student polls, videos, a podcast, and downloadable activities. Don't miss the downloadable field guide provided by Dr. Universe that offers many ideas and guidance to promote scientific learning in young scientists. The videos are hosted on YouTube. If your district blocks YouTube, then they may not be viewable.

Download the field guide and print copies for students to take notes and record their questions about the world around us. Submit questions to Dr. Universe to see if she will respond to your questions. Include the podcast as part of a learning or computer center in your classroom. Explore previous questions together as a class to find out answers to common questions such as "Why Do Leaves fall in the fall?" or "Why can't we breathe in space?" Include Dr. Universe's response within science lessons created using Curipod, reviewed here. Create and share interactive self-paced lessons in Curipod, including videos, quizzes, podcasts, and more. Have students extend learning by creating explainer videos using Kizoa, reviewed here about topics researched.

Create a free account to access over 100 lesson plans and professional development sessions that provide micro-credentials. Browse the featured resources or select activities by content area. Most activities provide a focus on virtual reality or augmented reality and include a facilitator's guide, introductory videos, and student activity worksheets. In addition, lessons offer options for teaching to different grade level bands that form a progression of learning. Spaces is a portfolio-creation tool that provides assessment opportunities and demonstrates student progress through three different types of Spaces. First, create a Class Space to share files and media and promote discussion for the whole class. Second, Group Spaces offer the ability to connect with groups designed from within the Class Space. Finally, Individual Spaces allow individual students and families to engage in sharing learning products. Use the tools provided in Spaces to add tags to show progress or curate work products. Other options include the ability to assign activities on specific dates and to particular groups and individuals.

Find an extensive list of free resources for developing learning about global issues from Oxfam's collection for education. These resources aim to give students the materials and activities to think critically and act responsibly. In this collection, you'll find activities, lesson plans, quizzes, PowerPoint presentations, and more. Topics explore high-interest issues for learners ages 7 to 14. Examples of a few cases are Children's Rights, Sustainable Clothing, Climate Change/Emergency/Challenge, Where Food Comes From, and much more. The units are downloadable in PDF format and include plans for different age groups, a teacher overview, related links, a detailed resource outline, and PowerPoints (where applicable).

In the Classroom
These units are very comprehensive! Choose a unit to complete as a class using your interactive whiteboard or projector to show students all activities, links, and other resources. Then go through some titles and descriptions of several units and ask the class which ones they would be interested in exploring. You may want to use a tool such as Padlet, reviewed here, to keep this organized and eventually form student groups. Students interested in the same topic can form small groups to explore their topics. For younger students, structure this in a very organized way in that all students will look at the links for their unit on a certain day and divide them up with their group to explore and share with other group members after a given time. For older students you could modify their technology use using a tool like Workona, reviewed here, to keep student groups organized and moving forward in their research. At the end of the research, enhance student learning by having student groups share with the class what they learned using a multimedia tool like Genially, reviewed here. With Genially, students can choose what type of presentation they want to use (interactive poster, infographic, videos, games, etc.).

Mensa for Kids provides free, high-quality resources for kids and educators that promote empowering intelligence in children. To promote reading across a variety of genres, take advantage of the Excellence in Reading Program. This program provides reading lists by grade categories that students print, then rate books on a five-star system. Complete the entire list and return to Mensa for Kids to receive a free t-shirt! Select the "Teach" category to find lesson plans and TED Connection Guides for classroom use. The Games portion of the site shares math and language activities shared in conjunction with Arcademics, reviewed here.

In the Classroom
Enrollment in Mensa isn't required to take advantage of the many resources found on this site for all students. Use the reading lists as a starting point for stocking your class library or a student reading list for the current school year. Encourage students to complete the reading list and return to Mensa for a free t-shirt. Incorporate the lesson plans into your existing curriculum, then differentiate learning as you adapt to student needs. For example, use the Book Review Writing lesson to help students understand the difference between reviews and reports. This lesson also includes specific information on what to have with book reports. Begin by teaching this lesson in small groups, then use Google Jamboard, reviewed here, to create a frame for each of the main topics. Enhance student learning by asking students to add sticky notes with their observations and thoughts. Have your group work together to share their book review using a simple to use blogging tool such as Telegraph, reviewed here. Extend learning further by creating a class podcast sharing book reviews created through the lesson process found on Mensa for Kids. Buzzsprout, reviewed here, is a free tool for creating and publishing podcasts that is appropriate for students of all ages. Use Buzzsprout to record and share book reviews throughout the school year.

Consider using Symbaloo, reviewed here, as a resource to curate and share bookmarked resources on classroom computers or share a link to your Symbaloo on your class web page. Use TheyDiffer as an example for students to enhance learning by sharing their comparisons of information or concepts. For example, as students compare life in the early 1900s to life in the 21st century, use the model provided for students to create infographics using Canva Infographic Maker, reviewed here. Extend learning by having students include their infographics with other research and create Sway, reviewed here, presentations. Most teachers are already teaching elements of computational thinking without knowing it. This workshop will help participants understand the fundamental tenets of computational thinking, most notably, how this concept combines critical thinking skills with the power of computing to make decisions or find solutions. Learn how to infuse computational thinking into your classroom activities across all core content areas. As a result of this session, teachers will: 1. Learn the fundamentals of computational thinking; 2. Explore activities and resources that promote computational thinking; and 3. Plan for the use of computational thinking in the classroom. This session is appropriate for teachers at all technology levels.

YouTube is a fantastic resource, but using YouTube videos in the classroom can be difficult in various situations. Make it easier by converting any YouTube video to a downloadable MP3 file to play directly from your device. Paste the link to your video and click the link to begin the download. The footage quickly converts into an MP3 file that is ready to download and use. This site also works as a resource for downloading music, entering a song's name, and searching. Download the results to your device as a music or audio file after choosing the desired selection.

Avoid problems with low bandwidth or filters that block YouTube by using this site to solve many of your classroom video issues. After downloading videos, share them with students in presentations created with multimedia tools like Sway, reviewed here or upload to your Google Classroom as part of assigned activity. Add additional resources such as links and quizzes, then share as a blended learning activity. This should primarily be a teacher resource. Create and share personalized learning activities using tools found at Learning Apps. Use the templates to create tools in various formats, including games, matching exercises, puzzles, and cloze reading texts. Begin by selecting a template and choosing an option from the examples provided. Next, add information to fill in each of the parts of the template, such as title, description, image, and links or content. When finished, view the preview, then save the app to your account. Editor's note: this site includes apps that are ready to use; however, many are not in English. In addition, a small portion of instructions for building an app may be in a different language, use a translating tool such as the one found at Linguee, reviewed here, to see the directions in English.

Take advantage of the free resources provided by Learning Apps to create activities for students to practice content in various formats. For example, make apps for students to complete timelines for books, historical events, or the steps in conducting a science experiment.
