Originally designed to help students in Great Britain prepare for the GCSE (General Certificate of Secondary Education), this collection of activities based on real-life interactions is ideal for independent practice of listening, reading, speaking, and writing skills. With an emphasis on understanding and comprehension, the site offers "revision bites," which focus on key concepts, and "test bites" which allow students to test themselves on mastery of these concepts. Make this site available in your foreign language classroom or recommend as an "at home" resource. Headphones recommended.

Use this site as a way to approach the tons of information students are expected to learn about the Roman empire. Assign students into pairs or cooperative learning groups, and have them choose one of the many topics to research in the "Rome Exposed" section. Have each student group research their topic, with the intent to present their information to the class. Have each group prepare a quick presentation by creating online books using a tool such as Bookemon, reviewed here. Books can be read and presented to the class via interactive whiteboard or projector.

Large, colorful site presenting extensive information about Paris - in English and French versions.

tag(s): france (40), french (88)

In the Classroom

In a personal economy lesson, use this site to help students "plan a trip" to Paris. Assign students to cooperative learning groups, with each group receiving a hypothetical amount of money, and directions to find lodging, food, transportation while surveying the sites of Paris. This is a great way to teach students how to budget with real world prices and figures. For an emphasis on French history, require students to participate in certain tourist activities in their hypothetical situation - simultaneously creating challenges to their budgets. A great way to add some relevance to an economics lesson.
