Podcasts are the perfect alternative for students who may have difficulty putting the word on paper, as they can share their information orally. In addition, students can record podcasts anytime a device is available, making this an ideal activity for multiple instructional scenarios, including in-person, remote, blended, and small group projects. In this second part of our podcasting series, you'll learn how students can create podcasts (audio recordings delivered via the internet) to demonstrate what they've learned. Join us to explore how podcasting fosters deep learning as an authentic activity and learn to plan, produce and publish podcasts for free with your students. As a result of this session, teachers will: 1. Understand the instructional strategies behind podcasting with students; Explore a free podcasting tool; and 3. Plan to create a podcast with students. Pexels offers free, high-quality stock photos and videos to use without attribution or account membership. Browse trending images on the home page or use the search bar to find resources to fit any need. After selecting an image, choose the free download icon to select an image size from those offered or create a custom size, then download it to your device. Download videos from several formats, including SD, HD, and 4K UHD. Although attribution isn't required, providing credit is always appreciated. Create a free account to create collections and save favorite images and videos for easy use.

The Achievery is a free digital learning platform created by AT&T in collaboration with Warner Brothers that pairs video clips with lessons to engage students in learning across seven subject areas. Create an account to access activities such as a poetry scavenger hunt with Amanda Gorman or learn reading and writing skills from Wonder Woman video clips. Begin at the "All Units" link to find content by grade level, standards, subject, and additional filters. Most lessons are part of a larger learning unit; however, they are ready to use as individual teaching activities. Each lesson includes correlations to teaching and CASEL standards (Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning), highlights relevant vocabulary, activity directions, and links to the featured video, and is available in PDF format. The Achievery lessons and activities are available in English and Spanish. This site would be a good one to leave for your substitute to use; it's high interest, no sign-in, and has lesson plans & video clips.

In the Classroom
Bookmark and save this site as a resource for lessons in many content areas to engage students using popular video clips. All lessons are created as remote learning activities making them easily adaptable for both in-class and out-of-class assignments. Easily find activities to differentiate instruction for different student ability levels by browsing options below or above the student's current grade level. Many lessons include worksheets in PDF format, turn these activities into a digital format by taking a screenshot of the document, then save as the background on Google Slides, reviewed here. Add text boxes in the appropriate place on the slide for students to add responses. Use Pear Deck Flashcard Factory, reviewed here, to create flashcards for students to practice the vocabulary highlighted in each lesson.
This resource requires PDF reader software like Adobe Acrobat.

Use Edit Photo's tools to crop images and add filters, frames, annotations, and more. Because this resource is so easy to use and works right within your browser, it makes it a perfect choice for many different classroom uses. For example, use the simple meme generator with a historical figure to introduce a new social studies unit with humor. Edit images to include on your classroom website to add text and stickers and crop out unwanted portions. Use this tool anytime photos need to be edited for class blogs, wikis, or presentation tools. In primary grades, this tool could be helpful for teachers to use to edit pictures from field trips, science experiments, and more. Share the editing process with younger students using an interactive whiteboard or projector. Edit together! Encourage older students to use this tool on images for projects or presentations. Use this tool in photography or art classes. Use the editor to edit pictures to fit styles of paintings when doing historical reports or to set a mood. Use text options for the photos themselves to tell the stories. Create engaging and informative timelines with the many different template options provided by Venngage. After creating an account, select the link offered to the templates. Within the templates, find infographics and then timelines. Scroll down the page to choose from the options that include timeline options for many different subjects and formats. Hover over any thumbnail to view a larger preview, then select create to view and modify the template. When using the timeline creator for the first time, take advantage of the quick tutorial walkthrough that shares features available for members. Next, use the dashboard to edit and add text, icons, charts, maps, and more. When finished, select the share button to publish your document to the web and access the public link of your timeline. Free plans allow members to create five designs, share them publically, and upload up to six images.

Use timelines for various classroom activities beyond just sequences of dates and times. For example, engage students in retelling stories by asking them to create timelines that share the series of events or locations found within a novel. Ask students to create a timeline of the growth of plants or step-by-step procedures of a lab experiment. Castbox provides tools for creating and sharing podcasts. First, create a free account, then begin by entering the Creator Studio. Next, select the upload icon to drag and drop your media file in a supported format of up to 400M. When the file begins uploading, complete the areas provided to include basic information for your files, such as a title, description, and publication date and time. Castbox also offers an option to upload an image for your cover design. When finished, select Publish to complete the creation of your podcast. Finally, click on your podcast to listen and share using the link or social media links provided.

In the Classroom
Castbox is an excellent podcast-sharing option for simple podcasts or when sharing audio recordings that have already been edited, for example, using editing tools on your computer. Create regular or special podcasts to share on your class web page or wiki. Are you looking for even more ideas? Record class assignments or directions. Record story time or a reading excerpt for younger ones to listen to at a computer center AND from home, adding a touch of blended learning to your classroom! Have readers (perhaps older buddies) enhance their learning and build fluency by recording selected passages for your non-readers. Launch a service project for your fifth or sixth graders to record stories for the kindergarten to use in their reading and listening center. Challenge students to create "you are there" recordings as "eyewitnesses" to historical or current events. Make a weekly class podcast, with students taking turns writing and sharing the "Class News," encourage and extend learning and have students create radio advertisements for concepts studied in class (Buy Dynamic DNA!). Invite students to write and record their own stories or poetry in dramatic readings. World language students or beginning readers could record their fluency by reading passages. Allow parents to hear their child's progress reading aloud, etc. Compare world language, speech articulation, or reading fluency at two points during the year. Challenge your Shakespeare students to record a soliloquy. Write and record a poem for Father's or Mother's Day (or other special events) and send the URL as a gift to that special person. If you have gifted students who lean toward the dramatic, this tool is simple enough for them to create dramatic mini-casts without needing any additional tools. Poll Maker makes it easy to create and share polls in just a few seconds without requiring registration. Add your question and response choices in the blanks provided; options allow you to find and add images to both the question and the responses if desired. Additional tabs provide options for selecting and customizing a theme and personalizing settings. Setting options include security features, multiple answers as responses, and selections to hide or show results. Advanced settings allow you to set the start and end dates of polls. When ready to share your poll, copy and share the link, copy and paste the embed code onto a website, or invite users to your poll via email. Registration isn't required; however, it allows you to create and manage additional polls and view hidden results.

Bookmark and save this handy site for many different classroom uses. Engage students when introducing a new topic by creating a poll to assess learning quickly or find students' interest in a topic. Use a poll as an exit ticket or as a formative assessment. Enhance learning by adding a link to a poll as part of a blended or flipped learning activity. For example, when delivering a flipped learning lesson using Microsoft Forms, reviewed here, include a link to a poll that asks students to reflect upon their understanding of the content learned. Extend learning by sharing the Poll Maker with students and asking them to conduct polls to gather information when learning about graphing. Curipod creates interactive lessons using AI (artificial intelligence) technology. Tasks include features for making word clouds, adding polls, questions, and more. Visit the Discover link to browse through ready-to-use templates or create an account, then copy and edit a lesson using a template or build one in just a few seconds using your prompt and instructions. When creating a new lesson, start with a blank slide or use templates that include a brain break, exit ticket, multiple choice, or complete lesson. The brain break generators include several stress-free tasks, such as Would You Rather questions, and fun writing and drawing prompts. To create new tasks, add a topic and include standards if desired. Another option allows you to import PowerPoint presentations and PDFs when creating new activities. When ready, share lessons with students using the provided QR code or the join code for students to access at curi.live. View statistics in your dashboard, including the number of times played and player results. Free accounts currently include unlimited players, five private Curipods, a shared workspace, and all core features.

In the Classroom
Use Curipod as a starting point for creating lessons and student activities, then modify the content to fit your curriculum and students' abilities and needs. The Brain Break activities are an excellent starting point for using Curipod in your classroom. Select an activity from the Brain Break options, then choose a grade level and follow the prompts to share a short mental break with your students. Copy and paste standards when creating a lesson as a starting point to add content for the lesson. When using any AI technology, verify the information provided is accurate before sharing it with students. Use Curripod as a flipped or blended learning activity, share the join code with students, and ask them to complete the activities within a designated period before reviewing together as a class. Easily modify any template to differentiate instruction for different groups of students. For example, when introducing decimals, provide a basic introduction with vocabulary and instructional content to one group of students but add more challenging content, such as adding decimals for students already familiar with this topic.
