Question:
Schools in many parts of the world are on vacation during July, and students are thinking about anything BUT school. If you could be a pop-up on students' television, game, or computer screens, what message or reminder would you like to send to your students (or their parents) while they are away from school?

On your list of things to do this summer, add "Enjoy a good book!". Have fun, and read, read, read.

If I could be a pop-up on my students' televisions, video games, or computer I would remind my students to go outside and play. Then I would tell them to read anything that interests them.

Beyond the obvious of read a good book or review math and writing skills, I would like to encourage my students to become engaged in creative play. I define creative play as any activity where you create, make or develop something from what ever is at hand. Build a cart or scooter from a set of old wheels and scrap wood you might find laying around. Design a computer game or create some digital art. Using the art you generate, create greeting or note cards to sell in coffee and gift shops. Learn to sew, knit, make cookies or some other type of craft and share your creations with others in shelters or care centers. Not only can creative play provide great enjoyment during the long summer, but it can also be a source of the best learning and lessons in life. Remember, not all learning has to be standards based to be meaningful and important.

Recharge your battery, lay on the grass, look in the sky on a day when clouds are fluffy white and use your imagination to see what shapes appear from the clouds...use your imagination in ways you cannot during the school year. Be creative!
