Question of the Week Archives

Question:

As many schools near the end of the first marking/report period, teachers try to help students understand where their report card grades "come from." Does your school use an online grade reporting system so parents and students can access grades any time throughout the marking period? If so, do you think it has improved student accountability? If you do not have such an online system, do you wish your school had one?

We have been using Edline, which posts from our Gradequick gradebooks as often as we can do it. I have seen a huge change in both student and parent behavior over the 3 years we have used it. (Initially, parents thought it was the actual gradebook, and wanted instant accountability, but we got over that.)

It has had a huge impact on students - they see a zero grade for something they didn't hand in (or their parents see the zero and ask about it), and suddenly the missing assignment becomes important. In addition, students have identified my errors so I can correct them. And maybe most important, this access at the assignment level has opened up many informal conversations about grades which have helped students see more clearly the impact of their decisions.

I teach middle school, so giving them a tool that helps them stay on track, and accountable, is very helpful. I would not want to teach without this tool.

We use an online grading system that has a lot of bells and whistles. Parents and students can access grades anytime so it becomes a good communication piece. The downside is that I have some very involved parents who want to know why a test hasn't been graded and entered on the same day.I had to put a comment on my grade site that reminded parents that I have a week to post grades and two weeks for projects. When I enter grades I can put a comment down so parents know right away why their child received the score he/she received.Since students can access their grades in all classes, I am seeing them become more responsible. They will ask to retake a test to better their grade. Also, they will use their Advisory time to seek help from other teachers. I am glad we have this technology. I like how I can e-mail a grade report to a parent or hand out a printed one to my students who do not have technology at home.

We use an online grading reporting system and love it. The students check their grades often and keep track of how they are doing in each subject. The parents like to be able to keep an eye on their childrens' progress or loack of progress. I would recommend an online grading system to every school.
