Question of the Week Archives

Question:

If your students come to school the morning after election day sluggish and sleepy from watching election results well into the night, what will you say to them?

Replies:

Roslyn Freeman - Swansea, SC
Who won the presiidental election in room 204?

Peggy - Mt. Washington, ky
I will applaud them that they were diligent enough to be concerned about the election results. Whether they are sluggish or not, we will conduct a whole class segue session about the election results and allow students to share their point of view and feelings.

Well, we now have our new President finally. Let's resolve to help him set our country right immediately. We want Change & Change begins with me!

I'll spend time discussing the events of election night, and ask whether students kept tally of electoral votes as they were announced. I'll have them journal about which candidate they would have voted for, and why. Ask for a discussion of candidates' platform on different issues that the students think are important, and ask if their parents think the same issues are important. I'll question how many of their family members were able to vote, and how long they waited in line. This is such an important event with international impact that I believe it merits being incorporated into the day's instruction!

Did you feel that the coverage predicting the presidential winner was fair to the states still voting in the West? Also, how do you feel about the electoral votes vs. the popular vote determining new president?
