Question of the Week Archives

Question:

Nearly every newscast tells of budget cuts. What impact have budget cuts had on your classroom, and what creative solutions, if any, have you found so you are able to teach within the limitations? Please help your fellow teachers by sharing your successes!

I work in a parochial school, where the per-pupil spending is half that for public schools. We're used to finding creative solutions. I use Scholastic Book Clubs in my language arts class, and buy books for my classroom - free - using the bonus points I earn for the books my students buy. I also watch for the "deals" they have in multiple sets of one book - which are great for Literature Circles. Every year, I am able to get 4 or 5 new sets of book. If you do a Book Fair, you can also earn lots of free books - Scholastic has all sorts of deals built in which means you can earn free subject area books for the other teachers you work with, as well.

It also doesn't hurt to ask your parents for things you need.
