Question of the Week Archives

Question:

There are many new policy suggestions being considered to make college more affordable for all. When you think of your college experience what aspects of the college experience do you consider important to preserve, even in an era of cost-cutting? Are there other portions of a college education that you feel could be eliminated or changed in the interest of lowering costs?

I would like to see all the pre-reqs. reduce. My 2 years at a major Big 10 school were spent taking classes that had NOTHING to do with my eventual major and career.Seems that many of todays students have a bettter idea of what they have chosen to do with their life... why make them take 2 quarters of "Rocks for JOcks" (or geology, if they are in business or nursing, music etc.) By elimenating the pre-reqs. students could remove at least 1 year of classes.

Aspects of the college experience that should be preserved are the general education courses students are required to take. These courses exposed me to literature, art and various media that a musical performance student would not have. General Studies also allowed enough time to build better decision-making skills by enlarging my world view or providing a variety of perspective. Portions that could use some 'tweaking' are the additional fees for peripheral (extra-curricular) courses, such as music lessons, ceramics or chorus. I suggest these tutors/teachers receive a stipend for their work with already struggling students.
