Question of the Week Archives

Question:

Research tells us that healthy bodies make healthy minds. What efforts does your school make to encourage fitness and activity, especially as students face long days of testing? What have you done to sharpen minds by invigorating bodies?

Our P.E. department has new curriculum that emphasizes healthy choices through activities that build a strong body and mind. To help reenergize my group, I will take a 5 to 10 minute snack break in our Commons.I also try to break up my long class period with activities that get my hyper 8th graders up and moving.

Florida has a state requirement for the number of minutes of PE each week. This is accomplished with 30 minutes daily of "structured play." Our school uses a fitness trail with exercise stations, kickball, jump ropes, basketball, four square, etc. We also have PE class once a week. I have started using FREE pilates videos from the internet with my class once a week. My fourth graders love this time and each week we work up to a new challenge. Hey, it helps me too! We also incorporate Brain Gym activities daily and especially before and during standardized testing times.
