Question of the Week Archives

Question:

Teachers know more about local and neighboring schools than many data-reporting agencies. If you were selecting a house to buy in a new community, what would you ask about the schools? What kind of advice would you give to friends looking to buy a home where you teach?

Talk about a good question that I need answered!! I am moving to a new community now and would like such information. I have contacted the district where I am going to be working but they seemed unprepared to answer such questions. Very few have asked them for this information. This then is a resource that has not been developed. As new to the area I need the following information; best place to live (apt, house, land, etc), utilities where do I go to get them and pay for them? Do I need building permits in this community? What are the taxes I should expect to pay yearly in this area? What are the positive and negative places in town (ie places where crime is high or best places to eat)? When moving from out of state like I am there are enough huddles to overcome just in getting your family to a new place without having to worry about where the guy to hook up the electric is. Where an apartment complex is that will meet a budget that is low because of the move...etc. The school question is how are the teachers in this school describe them (caring/aloof, uncommunicative/we talk alot about the good and the bad).
