Question of the Week Archives

Question:

Back to School time can be expensive. What do you plan to do as a teacher (or as a parent) to keep Back To School costs down this year?

I recycled all my old crayons from the past three years (threw out broken, small, etc. ones) resharpened them, sorted them into family colors and filled each of my group supply buckets with a set. I also sharpened all the colored pencils that have accumulated, sorted them as well and put them in the supply buckets. I tested all the markers I had to make sure they still work - and yes - I sorted them into the buckets as well. All I have to buy are glue sticks and regular pencils at the penny sales.

I made a list of what supplies I was low on at the end of the year. Now, I check the Sunday paper and shop for all the sale items. My favorite are the penny items. Staples lets teachers buy 25 of the penny items. Office Depot only lets you double the amount of the limit-if the limit is 3-they let teachers buy 6. Every penny counts.

I am a Kindergarten teacher. I buy a lot out of my own money. I will hit the stores on our tax free weekend.

I have been investing in a Sunday sales paper to find which stars have the dirt cheap promos such as glue sticks for 9 cents and crayola crayons for 25 cents, etc. I stock up on these for the classroom and school supplies for my children. I also plan to bring the circulars to Wal-Mart to price match if the advertising store is sold out and will not issue rainchecks.
