Question of the Week Archives

Question:

Are you on Facebook? If so, do you limit your Facebook presence to a professional or personal side? How do you prevent or handle potential crossover?

No! Unfortunately, there is no way that I am able to keep up with all the things a busy mother and teacher has to accomplish let alone participate in Facebook. I would love to connect with others, but there seems to be no time.

Yes I am on Facebook. My Facebook page is completely personal, with almost all of my friends being from my high school graduating class. I'm listed on FB under my maiden name, hopefully making it harder for students/parents to search for me. I've been active on FB for about 2 years now and I've only received one friend request from a student and none from parents. As for the one I did receive, I just ignored it...and nothing has been said about it. (Hopefully that works!)

I do not allow current students or any students who have not yet graduated from high school to be on my friends' list. I do not allow them to seen anything on my page, including pictures. I do have many former students on my list, many of whom are married and have children of their own. It's really fascinating to see how they've grown.

As far as banning current students, I don't feel that I want them to know the comings and goings of my life. Most all of my friends are adults and I choose to keep it that way. I know some teachers that allow students and I guess that's their personal preference.

Yes, I have a facebook page. It is primarily for interaction with family and friends I have known for a long time, but are scattered across the globe.

Yes, I am on Facebook but I limit it to family and friends only. At first I had former and present students as friends but their communications became overpowering. Unfortunately, I was able to see what they said to their friends. Because of this I have since removed them from my friend list and I deny all others access. In this way there is no crossover.

I am not on Facebook; I don't have time for things like that.
