Question of the Week Archives

Question:

Imagine "Most Meaningful Day," a day when you, as the teacher, select the topic(s) your one class of students will learn about for one full, most meaningful day. No mandates, no testing, no approvals, just what YOU think is important. What would you select as the topic(s) for that day and how would you facilitate the learning? (Be sure to tell us how old the students are, too!)

This year I teach 12 and 13 year old seventh graders. If I could teach anything one day without being mandated, I would spend all day with my students doing things for others. They would visit our nursing home next door. I would have my students talk with our military, and I would have them spend time at our hospital visiting with children that are stuck in the hospital. At this age, teens are concerned about themselves. I want my students to learn, even at this age, that it is important to care about others. As corny as that may sound, I want my students to know that they do not have to like everybody, but everybody deserves to know that someone cares about them.
